Prom Our Own Correspondent. Miss Owen, who is attached to the nursing staff of the Wellington public hospital, and who is at present on furlough, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. Owen, of Main street. Mrs. E. Parkin has returned to Poxton after spending a few days in Wellington.

A very pleasant musical evening was spent at the residence of Mr, and Mrs. Doel, Duncan street on Friday when a number of friends gathered to bid farewell to Mr. D. M. Scott of the staff of the local District High school. Items were contributed by both Mr. and Mrs. G. P, Smith, Mrs. Doel, Miss Patterson and Miss Woods. Mr. Scott is leaving at the end of the month to take up a position on the staff of the District High school at Reefton. Poston Pire Board.

The quarterly meeting of the Foxton Pire Board was held on Friday evening. There were present Messrs. A. H. Cierkc (chairman), J. K. Ilornblow, M. E. Perreau, C. J. Gray, John Ross and the secretary (Mr. R/oore Rangiheuea). The following correspondence was received. A communication from the Association executive committee concerning remits passed at the Pire Board?’ conference held on August 10, 1927, stated that the remits were then forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs for his consideration, with a view to having the existing legislation amended, but so far nothing further had been done in the matter. The Under-Sccretary for the Department of Internal Affairs wrote, enclosing approved estimates for the year 1929-30. A further letter from the Under-Secretary was received, advising that before the board could establish a capital expenditure fund, it ■would be necessary to obtain the approval of the Minister. A telegram was also received from the Under-Secre-tary intimating that lie had since found that the necessary approval had already been granted. A report was received from the brigade, wdiich dealt with the recent conference of brigades which took place at Hokitika. An estimate of cost of fitting new cushions to the billiard table used by the lire station was received, and it was decided that this work bo done immediately.

The U.F.B.A. forwarded a copy, -a demonstration time sheet. The superintendent invited members of the board to bo present at the brigade’s annual ball, which is to take place on July 9. It was decided to accept the invitation. The acting superintendent (Mr. H. J. Reid), in his quarterly report to the board, stated that the strength of the brigade at present was 15 men and 1 messenger. There had been no calls to fires. Eloven practices have been held with an average attendance of 13.3. The brigade held its annual meeting on June 13, when officers for the year were elected. The new uniforms had arrived and with a few alterations in fitting, every member now had one full working uniform and one dress uniform. The equipment was all in good order. fHe further stated that at the request

of the chairman of the local committee ho had ascertained the cost of installing an electric water heater at the station. The cost complete with all plumbing work would be £ls. The superintendent said he wished to recommend the early installation of an electrically operated siren. He considered it was very necessary in a small brigade such as the local one where members were not always present at the station to receive telephone calls for alarms. He also wished to draw to the attention of the board'that the boot allowance for the year had not yet been received.—The report was adopted. The financial statement and estimates for tho> current quarter as submitted by the secretary were adopted. The appointment of Mr. H. Huss as a member of the brigade was approved. The board decided to request the brigade to submit to each quarterly meeting for inspection registers of plant and uniform.

Accounts amounting to £BS/11/9 were-passed for payment.
