ZANE GREY AND TRIPLE HOOKS
So Mr. Zane Grey doesn't like those triple hooks, says an Auckland commentator. From the tone of his published utterances it would seem that the only things Zane doesn’t like about New' Zealand are the New Zealanders. He certainly likes our swordfish, and he doesn’t seem to object to our scenery. Sometimes bo so far overcomes his nausea as to betray a sneaking regard for the Government Publicity department. But that, of course, is all a matter of dollars and cents. Eveti a prominent American sportsman, who is in the game- just for his pure and undefiled love of fishes, cannot sell his books unless be has a wee bit of ballyhoo. .It must bo terribly difficult for Zane, writing those books just for the pure love of writing, while all about him are murderous New Zealanders slaughtering fish by the most- barbarous methods, while gentio Zane with his expert launchmcn, and costly equipment, and tender methods, only lands his one or two a week, and that almost apologetically, just, for the sake of appearances. For without catching a fish or two, how could a sportsman who is in Iho game for love sell his books on fishing? Oh, yes, it’s a heartrending problem, this question of hooks, thougu the fish may deem both the single and triple liook equally objectionable when it’s a question of being caught. But, of course, that is just an abstract argument. And Zane will always have the last word, for lie is an Expert, and Writes Books. The pen is mightier than the trinlc hook, •
