From Our Own Correspondent. The many friends of Miss Camp, Buckley, will regret to hoar that she is an inmate of the Palmerston North hospital as the result of injuring her leg through slipping on the verandah of her house. All will wish her a speedy recovery. Miss Brady is also still an inmato of the hospital. A general meeting of members of the Women’s institute was held on Wednesday afternoon, when Miss Spencer, Dominion organiser, paid an unexpected visit, and gave an interesting talk on institute work. She also displayed a number of home made toys, the work of a member of the institute. Mrs Pallant has been elected secretary of the local branch and Mrs Burling treasurer. Mrs F. Jamieson, Kara road, has returned from a holiday in Wellington.

Mrs W. H. Gunning has returned from a holiday in Nelson, accompanied by Mr and Mrs .Noel Gunning. Mr F. Linsell, W'hakatane, is tho guest of Mr B. L. Tippler. Mr Dave Gardiner, an old time resident of Shannon, is on a visit renewing old acquaintances. Tho weekly 'euchre tourney held in Laurvig’s hall continues to be popular. On Thursday evening 64 players took part. The following were the winners:—Ladies: Mr Peach, 51b. box of tea; Mrs Holdsworth 251 b. bag of Hour; Mrs Butler Üb. of tea. Men: Mr Ellery, 51b. box of tea; Mr C. Johnson, 251 b. bag of flour; Mr. L. Satherley, lib. of tea. Gunning and Co.’s Ltd. special prizes, Mosdames Moynihan and Ellwood. Those who qualified to compete for watch are Mrs L. Bichat dson and Messrs J. Osborne, E. Bussell, T. Moore, K. Carter and Pullman. Next week the total proceeds will be donated towards the relief of sufferers by the earthquake. Messrs. Mason and Peach havo donated a prize for this tourney. The committee invites persons to assist with donations towards the prizes. v Children’s Pancy Dress Party.

The children’s plain and fancy dress party organised by the committee of tho Girl Guides, was a great success in spite of inclement weather. The prize list . was as follows:Under 8 years: Girl, Valerio Young; boy, Brian Moynihan. Over 8 years: Joan Bovis and Harry Warman. Most original: Jean Tayler and Phil Coyle. Judge’s special award: Kay Bichardson and Bill Ellwood. Special prize for mother present with most children in fancy dress: Mrs A. K. Saxon, Buckley, with four children. The bail was tastefully decorated and I with the many colours worn by "iris and boys, the scene was a gay one. Mr. Bovis and Mr. P. Cole acted as M’s.C., assisted by Mr. Conquest with song and story. Music supplied by Mrs Butler, assisted by Mason added greatly to the enjoyment of the evening. The committee wishes to thank all those who donated prizes for the children, also the mothers and others who who provided supper, _ thus assisting greatly the Shannon Girl Guide movement. Friday evening’s ..social and dance resulted in a brilliant success, about . 150 people being present . The music for the dance was in the capable hands of Mr and Mrs Pareell, whilst the rolo of M.C. was undertaken by Messrs P. Cole and Lou Milner. Between the dances, items were rendered by a concert party from Palmerston North and if the insistent demand for encores ■ was proof of the appreciation of tho audience then the items must havo , been thoroughly enjoyed. The concert party opened with a pianoforte duct by Messrs MacKenzic and Leng-Ward, the overture from “Buy Bias,” the encore item being “No. 2 Hungarian Rhapsodic,,; Mrs Kendall followed with a soprano solo “Amarelm” and “I go My Way Singing” as the encore. Miss Lorna Ferguson had to give three recitations “Tho Sad Story of a Motor Fan,” “After Marriage in Four Scenes” and “If Life were

a Play.” Tho next item, was a vocal duet by Messrs Stan Kingston and Lcng-Ward “The Battle Eve” after uhjjh the old warhorse “Watchman what of tho Night” appeared. After the supper interval a relieving curate was introduced in the shape of Mr. Farmer, who kept the audienco in fits cf laughter for a quaner of an hour. Mr F. MacKenzic was next to appeaT

with two piano solos, Chopin’s “Scherzo” and “The Musical Box.” Tho last item on tho programme was given by Mr. Kingston, who sang “Here’s a Health to All,” and “The Little Irish Gill.” At this stage of the proceedings the Rev. FarneU, on behalf of the ladies’ guild, thanked Mr Kingston for bringing the artists down, Mr Leng-Ward for organising tho party and the artists for the excellent programme, musical honours bo ing accorded. An insistent demand resulted in Mr Fanner’s reappearance and the party eventually broke up in the sina’ wee hours.
