BLACK AND WHITES AT MASSEY COLLEGE
Gratifying Returns
Tho pedigree Friesian herd at the Massey Agricultural college, Palmerston North, has given very gratifying returns during tho post season. It will be remembered that the college in December, 1927, purchased 29 in-calf heifors from the pedigreo Friesian herd of the New Zealand government at Wcraroa Central Development farm, Levin. Other' heifers were presented to the college by Major R. A. Wilson, Mr. W. A. Kyle, the Bloomfield Farm, Ltd., Sir A. H. Russell, Mr. J. H. Liggins and the T. 0. Hodgson estate.
The cows have been milked twice a day and the milk of each cow has been weighed and tested daily. One heifer (practically all the heifers were first ealvers), Dominion Queen Bess, a granddaughter of that great foundation cow, Olga, produced 576.31 b. but-ter-fat in 355 days. This heifer, milked twico a day, had no special feeding, so it will bo seen that her yield is wonderfully good. She calved again on March 28, 1929, 17 days over a year from her previous calving. Probably tho best typo heifer on tho farm is Dominion Cornelia do Kol, a heifer that calved very early. She has milked right through, giving 4611 b. fat in 459 days. Dominion Forest Flower, a granddaughter of the show cow Dominion Forest Queen, is an exceptionally high producer—in one week slio gave 520.1 lb. milk with au average test of 3.5 per cent. This equals just on seven and a half gallons daily. Other performances are:—Dominion Princess Royal, 3271 b. fat in 264 days; Dominion Margaret, 29Slb. in 235 days; Dominion Blanche, 2661 b. in 229 days; Dominion La Belle, 2861 b. in 219 days; Dominion Carnation Mercedes; 3251 b. in 232 days? Dominion Betty Favne (second calf), 3101 b. in 195 days; Dominion Helena, 2321 b. in 166 days; Dominion Carnation, 2341 b. in 178 days. Of two grade Fricsians one has given 2871 b. fat in 3SO days, and another 4031 b. fat in 403 days.
There are two Friesian herd sires, Hobson Ensign Zozo Acme (Ensign Pontiac Valdessa Fayne—Hobson Zozo Pontiac), presented to the college by the Hobson Farm, Ltd., Wharepapa, Auckland, and Fendalton Naz Posch 2nd. ' (Grcenhill Sylvia Naz do Kol— Bamfield Daisy Sylvia), presented by Mr. J. I. Royds, Fendalton, Christchurch. Tho heifer calves sired by these bulls are a pleasing lot—three particularly promising heifers being sired by Hobson Ensign Zozo Acme, a bull whose granddam has a C.O.R. of 905.891 b. fat, and whose -dam, Hobson Zozo Pontiac, at present in S.O. test, has produced 11,508.31 b. milk - and 407.291 b. fat in 162 days to the end of March, 1929.
