DIVORCEE AGED 56 GETS £375 DAMAGES

BREACH OF PROMISE. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Last Night. An interesting breach of promise suit came before Sir Alexander Herdman in the Supreme Court this morning. Jane Sutherland, aged 56, a divorcee with eight children, sued John Mawhiuney, aged 58, a painter, for £IOOO. The evidence showed that the parties lived together for seven years. Mawhinney built a £2OOO house and took Sutherland fie- live there. In 1925, plaintiff obtained- a divorce, she having been long.-, separated from her husband. In 1927,' Mawhinney made a trip to Ireland- and married another woman there. ’ -Ga being examined by tho Judge, defendant admitted he had promised bejr'oro Mrs. Sutherland’s divorce that he 'would marry hor. The Judge in'reviewing the evidence, found there had been a definite promise of marriage and awarded £375 damagos.
