HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING,

From Our Own Correspondent. The new Bannevirke Hospital board met for the first time on Friday, the following being present: Messrs Drummond (chairman), Millar, Bunny, Peebles, Fredcvickson, Harding. Morgan, Hansen, Crosse, Stein and Dobson (secretary).

T{ic chairman opened the meeting by congratulating the oid members upon their re-election and extended a hearty welcome to new members. Tho acting Director-General oi Health advised that the estimates for the year ending March 31, 1930, had been approved by the Minister.

The chairman remarked that" the government subsidy this year was only 14s Sd in tho £., and it would appear that the more economically a hospital was run, tho smaller was the subsidy. Mr. Stein supported the chairman’s remarks. On the motion of Mr Hansen seconded by Mr Millar, it was resolved to forward a letter to Mr. C. F. Baker, Woodville, expressing appreciation of hie valuable services during his term of office. A letter was received from (the trustees of tho Rathbone estate, regretting they were unable to agree to the application of tho board in connection with a grant towards a maternity home in the local hospital, as they had already made a grant to the hospital.

The medical superintendent advised that there wore 81 patients in hospital comprising 23 women, 19 men, 10 cliildren and 23 cases of scarlet fever.

The matron stated that during the month the hospital had been extremely busy, the isolation ward being filled. Periodicals and gifts were acknowledged from Dr. Beedie, Misses Kidford and Spockman, Mrs Fryer, Mrs Clark, Messrs Buchanan and Hibbard. Accounts amounting to £1304 8s 2d were passed for payment. The question of nurses’ salaries and holidays was brought up by Mr Frcderickson. He stated it was rumoured the local hospital’s wages were the smallest in New Zealand. The chairman said the salaries were reviewed last year and brought into line with those paid by boards the same size as at Dannevirke. Ho had never heard of any complaints from tho nurses. *

Mr. Fredcriclcson: You will neve: find nurses complaining. The chairman: Oh, yes they will.

Mr. Stein thought with Mr Frederiekson that the information should be obtained. He also added that where nurses had a busy week, they were entitled to a day off occasionally.

The chairman: If the board is prepared to increase, its staff it can be done.

Mr Hansen: I would suggest that Mr Frcderickson hold the matter over and that meanwhile the chairman and finance committee go into the question with the medical superintendent and the matron. Mr.Froderickson: I am in favour of that. The chairman: Wo shall look into it. Mr. Frcderickson remarked that evening meetings would be more satisfactory as most of the members were busy in the daytime. It was decided to hold this matter for discussion at the next meeting. It was resolved on the motion of Mr fete in, seconded by tho chairman, that in future the collections received during the month be embodied in the report of tho finance committee. Farmers’ Union.

The annual meeting of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Provincial branch of tho Farmers’ union will be hold on Thursday at Dannevirke, when the animal report aud balance sheet will be presented, officers elected and remits for the Dominion conference considered. Ali farmers are specially invited to attend. The balance sheet shows members subscriptions amounted to £620 2s 9d while a profit of £25 4s 8d was made on lime and manure. The net profit for the year was £2 11s, the chief items of expenditure being salary aud commissions £l7O. Dominion levies £149 4s Oil, postages, etc., £54 Ss 4d, printing, etc., £SO 17s Sd, bank interest £BO 3s Oil, rates £2l 3s Sd, organiser's expenses £l2 19s 3d, expenses of delegates to conference £lO 11s, depreciation £2l. Mr. and Mrs Alex Baines (Te JLJri) have motored to Wellington. Mr. A. R. Thompson, stutionmaster, has resumed duty after spending a holiday in the South Island.

Mr. C. W. Thom has been elected to represent the Wimbledon riding on the Weber County council. Mr D. Paviour-femith returned to Dannevirke on Saturday aider an extended visit abroad.

Mr Pickard, secretary of tho Power board, is attending the annual conference of Power board secretaries in Wellington. Sir George I-lunter, M.P., has been Ositing Dannevirke.

Tho Dannevirke, Rotary club held its weekly luncheon on Friday. There was a good attendance, Rotarian , Kuucimau welcoming the guests, among j whom were the Mayor (Mr Marcus '■ Smith) aud city councillors. I Mr. A. J. Hawke, who for the past {five years has been manager of the j Tiakitahuna factory, has been appointed manager of the Kiritaki factory from 44 applicants. Mr. A. Soundy, of Danncvirke, has been appointed teachers’ advocate for Central Hawke’s Bay before the Grading Appeal board. Hon E. A. Ransom (Minister of Public Works) returns to Wellington tc-niglit. Mr J. McLean, formerly of Queen’s lark school, Wanganui, who was appointed headmaster of Dannevirke North school, vice Mr. P. G. Lewis, commenced duty yesterday.

NORSEWOOD. Mr. and Mrs Jackson (Barbara,

N.S.W.) are visiting Mr and Mrs N. Walsh, South Norsewood. Aliss I). Olsen (Wellington) who was recently the guest of her father Mr. A. Olsen has left for Hastings. Airs AlcAneney, accompanied by Aliss O. Cars ion, has been staying with Mi and Mrs A. E. Boyle.

Mr and Airs Gaze ami their daughter have retuvnc t from a visit to Napier.

Airs Robinson (Waipukurau) is accompanied by her daughter on a visit to Mr A. Olsen. Yesterday was cold and wet for tho resumption of school work, but the r.cw heating system made conditions cosy for the scholars. Aliss Luce returned on Sunday from the school vacation to resume duty yesterday. Airs F. J. Smith aud her daughter Gwen, aud Aliss Rene Dahlberg returned yesterday from a holiday to Poni'crcre beach, Waipawa. The following will represent Norsewood A and Norsewood B in. the sevenaside tournament on Wednesday:—F. Rendle, E. Brabazon, W. Hoppi, L Barclay, J. Edgecombe, J. Chaytor, Gunderson (2), Poulson (3), J. Hanten, J. McCulloch, N. Smith. The Alen -'s Hockey club held a successful 500 card tournament recently. Mrs Culliford won the ladies’ prize and Alaster Higlifield the men’s. Airs H. Alextod, who has been visiting her parents, Air and Mrs Sanders (Te Kuiti) lias returned home. The town hall was recently the scene of a social and dance held in aid of the local Alcthodist Ladies’ guild. The evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present, was well patronised, games and eompetions being successfully arranged and carried out under the supervision of Air E. Parsons. A hearty vote of thanks was tendered to all helpers.

ORMONDVILLE. The Rev. F. W. Whiblcy, who has been on a visit to Wanganui, has returned. Aliss N. Wilson lias been transferred to the teaching staff of Tah.orau.te school. Miss Eileen Skidmore (Waipukurau) who was recently the guest of Airs Alurphy (Ormomlville) has returned home.

Airs F. L. Selby (Dannevirke) has been visiting friends here. Airs T. G. Hosking, accompanied by Aliss Dorothy and Alan, arc visiting Dannevirke.

Euchre was the principal attraction of an evening’s enjoyment which took place in the Oddfellows’ hall on Thursday the prizewinners being Alesdamcs Alacdonald and liowes and Mr Scott.

In the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, of Tuesday, April 23, there is an inset of Mr A. L. Wills, the newly appointed superintendent of the Allegheny County Juvenile Detention Home. Air Wills is a son of Airs Wills, of Ormoudvillc, aud has been in America for some years. He has lately been appointed to his present position and has to supervise all work connected with children passing through the juvenile courts of Allegheny county.

WEBER. The Weber Football club hold a successful dance on Wednesday, which was well attended. Air Hales was AI.C. The fire at Air. W. Palmer’s magnificent residence totally destroyed tho building. Only a few garments were saved.

The Weber County council held its annual statutory meeting with Councillors J. S. and W. S. Halos, Alorgans, Stewart and Harvey present. Councillor J. S. Hales was elected chairman.

Air. Cowley refereed the' Hunter shield contests on Saturday, the scores being: Rangers 3, Excelsior 0. lii spite of the rain there was a good attendance.

RUA ROA. Mr and Mrs Jones* (Carterton) are visiting Air W. H. Shute. Aliss I. Shute is on a visit to the Wairarapa. Airs Thwaites (Wellington) is the guest of Air and Mrs Senk. She is accompanied by her daughter. Major Wright (Weilsford) at one tuue relieving headmaster of the District school, Rita Roa, married Aliss Atelville ,o£ Weilsford. The wedding took place at St. David's Church, Auckland, on Alay 15.

MAKOTUKA. Mr. L. Fothergill has been appointed district delegate on the Farmers’ union vice Mr. L. Wright, who has resigned. The Progressive association held its annual meeting recently with Mr. L.

Wright in the chair. The secretary, Mr. Mildon, brought forward the annual report and balance sheet, the working account showing a credit of £3l which was £l2 greater than the previous year.

The chairman remarked that considerable improvement had been made to the base of the public memorial. The re-gilding of letters of soldiers’ names to the memorial had a very pleasing effect. A tribute was paid to feir George Hunter, M.P., who had been a member of rite district for so many years, also to Mr. and Airs Palmer who were responsible for obtaining signatures for the petition to the Minister

of Railways iu connection with the running of trains also other matters pertaining to such petition. The present committee and retiring officers were re-elected for the coming year.

Messrs Wright and Fothergill, retiring delegates to the Dannevirke branch of the H.B'. War Relief association, were re-elected for the ensuing year.

Air. P. Lyons an old resident of Makotuku, will shortly leave here. Air Lyons has at all times taken a keen interest in the progress of the place and it ha.s been decided that a dance and social be held on Alay 29 in the nature of a farewell.
