SPORTING

Pouri was scratched for the Great Northern Hurdles at GAO p.m. yesterday. Mr. W. White has sold Grand Acre to Trainer Jennings, of Christchurch. He will be trained there on behalf of a Dunedin owner. The horseman L. Dulieu has had a fair measure of success since he commenced riding for R. Hannon’s stable, the most important being his win on Roman Abbey in the Egmont Steeples. This rider will be on Roman Abbey and Wedding March at tho Great Northern meeting, and will also ride Takutama, King’s C'omot, Ripon Abbey, and Tinokoa in their respective engagements at the same fixture. Sir Moment is stated to be coming ou well under the charge of his veteran owner at Opaki. The gelding will nrobably be seen in the hurdles at Gtaki. Teri has gono lame and is to be spelled.

An early favourite for the Kaukawa Cup is Lady Limond. Her performance in running second to Paitonu in the Connolly handicap is sufficient recommendation for the big event at Otaki, where the going will be to her liking. Conditions will be in favour of Blimp on the ten furlongs race at Otaki. He ran a fair race for fifth place in the Connolly handicap at tV anganui. Broad Acre has been consistent but nrducky. A chance to get the fat end of the stake for a change will be given him in the Huia handicap at Otaki. Another Awapuni candidate in form is Dobbin, which has come out well in a busy season. Among the runners in the Birthday handicap at Wangatui the first day is Prickles which should go well with her light weight. A strong card for the Otago steeplechase is tVliarncliffe, which should only have to stand up to win. When Royal Doulton won the Massey Memorial handicap at Pukekohc recently she was ridden by R. J. Mackie and she will again have the services of that rider in the Cornwall handicap. If she displays the same dash in her coming engagements as she did in her latest outing. Royal Doulton may have to bo seriously reckoned with in the mile and a-quarter handicap. She has not been lucky in her races at Ellcrslie this season, although she was finished well up in several important handicaps.

Sound work is all that has been exacted from Comical since his arrival here .and consequently he has not attracted as much attention as some of the horses who have been schooling. The big chestnut looks all the better for the race he had last week and promises to make a bold showing in the Great Northern hurdles, even though he may find it difficult to turn the tables on Mister Gamp. A. H. Burt is to ride him in liis engagements. Mister Gamp is still a very big factor in the market for the G.N. Hurdles and he has been doing well since he arrived with his mentor, J. P. Coyle, at Ellerslie. However, there is no gainsaying the fact that he wall bo faced with a much stiller task than the Wanganui battens. Beau Cavalier won the Great Northern Hurdles last year and finished fourth in the Great Northern Steeplechase under the steadier of 12.2. He subsequently won the Winter Hurdles, two miles aind a-quarter, at Trentham with 10.2. This horse has suffered from soreness recently, but he now seems to be coming right again. However, a Northern writer, “Whalebone," does not thiDk that he has had sufficient work recently thoroughly to fit him for the big hurdle race. Vexatious showed that she could jump EJlerslic country when she finished second to Star of the East in the Mangere Steeplechase last Easter. Her displays at Hawera were very fair, while she accounted for the Grandstand Steeplechase on the second day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting last Saturday. At Ellerslic she has been jumping cleanly and well. She should perform well in minor steeplechases at the Great Northern meeting.

Nukumai -was engaged in the Cornwall Handicap, Great Northern Hurdles, r.nd Great Northern Steeplechase, but was not paid up for any of them. King Lu aDd Kingfield were both nominated for the Cornwall Handicap and the Members’ Handicap, to be run at Ellerslie on Saturday, but they were only accepted for in the latter event. Glcngariff was nominated for the Great Northern Hurdles and Penrose Hurdles, but was not accepted for. He knocked himself recently, and that is the reason why he is not being brought to Ellerslie. Queen Arch and King Emerald, who finished first and second respectively in the Cornwall Handicap last June, are engaged in the event on Saturday. Both are in at the minimum as they were last year. Though up to the present Kawini has had to bo content with second place in all his most important engagements, he has managed to prize-money to the extent of £5375.

Although recent foim has proved Keddar to be a consistent galloper over sprint distances, lie lias 241 b. above the minimum in the .Members' Handicap to be run on the lirst day of the June meeting at Ellerslie, and will require to be at his best to defeat some of those lower down in the handicap. If Paddon had made any improvement at all since he scored in the Pukctaha Handicap at Tc lfapa he should £s> well in his engagements at Ellersiie. Ho won very eomtprtably at the Waikato meeting and is likely to strip an improved horse the next time he is saddled up to contest a race. Paddon is engaged in the Cornwall Handicap on the opening day of the Great Northern meeting, in which event he will be ridden by H. Wiggins. His’connections arc confident that he will put up a creditable showing in that race, particularly so if the going is heavy, as he handles bad ground much better than the average galloper.

Among those engaged in the Penrose Hurdles on the first day of the fillerslie meeting is Cybele. This mare won well at the Waikato meeting and gave promising displays at Wanganui, improving with each outing. Cybele should run well at the Great Northern meeting. Sleepy Sol is a newcomer to the hurdling game that has shown much aptitude for this department. He jumps confidently and gets away from his fences quickly. Thursby has been consistent this season and a heavy track will be a factor in his favour in the Cornwall Handicap, where he is on the minimum. Maidos is included in the field' for the Green Lane Steeplechase, and if he starts can be depended upon to run a good race. He won nicely at Wanganui over two miles and has only (31b. more to carry in the northern event. Locarno is not in the Great Northern Hurdles, but is entered for tho L’emuera Hurdle race on the second, an event won by tho same stable last June with lied fuchsia, who was similarly nominated. lie linished fourth in the Century Hurdles at Wanganui, but should improve on that performance. His ell'orts in winning at Avondale and being second in the Franklin Cup are sure to bring High Pitch into favour for the Cornwall Handicap. He has proved himself a good horse on a soft track and recently has raced equally well in firm going.

Soalown showed good form as a three-year-ohl, but he subsequently went amiss and was not raced for a iong time. He made his reappearance tiiis season aud has run up to tho expectations of his earlier days. In his first start he finished third in the Waverley Cup, one mile and a-quarter, and subsequently was second in the Alanawatu Cup, one mile and a-half, on a soft track, winning on the second 'day. Ho was third in the. Wairarapa Cup, one mile and a-quarter, and second in the President’s Handicap, nine furlongs and SO yards, at the same fixture. Ho won the Tamateto Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, at the Alanawatu autumn meeting and was second in the Great Autumn Handicap, one mile aud a-half, at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Seatown is engaged in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie, and with 9.G will have a lot of support. It is stated that he is goiug well aud he will be ridden by T. Green.

The crack steeplechaser Glcndowio put in an appearance at Ellerslic the other morning and was given pace work on the sand track. Judging by his condition he has been indulged in a fair amount of work and it was intended to jump him over the big fences during the morning. However, a cut on tlie forearm, where lie had been operated on some weeks ago, showed signs of opening up again and it was deemed advisable to refrain from exposing the wound to further risks. His owner, Air. H. Eothcry, stated that he had intended shipping Glcndowio to Sydney, but owing to tiie mishap previously mentioned, the trip has been abandoned in the meantime. Glcndowio will be a starter in the Great Northern Steeplechase, but so far no horseman has been engaged to ride him in that event. EIDERS FOR ELLERSLIE. Some of the riding engagements for the Auckland meeting have been announced as follow: — H. Stanwav. —Beau Cavalier, Sea Comet and Higliflown. Geo. Holland-Bright Land and Odin. H.
