SMALLER FARMS, WITH INTENSE CULTIVATION
SOLUTION OF UAND PROBLEM. GOVERNMENT OFFERED TWO HUNDRED ESTATES/ Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. “The ultimato solution of many of the country’s difficulties will undoubtedly bo an extension of land settlement, with smaller farms and more intense cultivation,” said Hon. J. G. Cobbe when speaking at tho annual meeting of the Auckland Manufacturers’ association. “Tho government is fully alive to tho necessity,” he continued, “but there are big difficulties to contend with. Wo have been offered between 200 and 300 estates, but up to the present wo have been able to buy less than half a dozen, the simple reason being that the prices asked ara absolutely prohibitive. I cannot help thinking that these land owners do not realise how they are handicapping the country. They would bo wise if they offered to sell at a reasonable price while tho going is good, to use an expressive phrase.”
