Ashhurst

From Our Own Correspondent. The 43rd anniversary of the Ashhurst Alethodist church was celebrated by special services last Sunday, a splendid congregation greeting the morning preacher, Air R. H. Billens, who gave a stirring address befitting the occasion. At the evening service the minister of the church, Rev. F. J. Parker, preached on the message to the church or to-day. During the service a sacred solo was rendered by Air C. G. Dunbar. The celebrations were continued on Tuesday evening, when a tea and social were held, and in spite of inclement weather proved a great success. The programme for the evening was supplied by visitors from Bunnythorpe, the following rendering much appreciated items: Airs Heggic, Aliss Winnie Sutherland, Aliss Alcrlc Heggic, Aliss Procter, Aliss Wood, Airs James and Messrs Woods and James. An interesting item was rendered by Air Neil Williamson, an old Ash hurst boy. During tho evening the Trust secretary, Air W. N. Brewer gave tho annual reort and balance sheet, which provided much interesting news of the church’s activities, and which showed the Trust finances to bo in a very happy condition, the credit balance carried forward enabling the trustees to instal electric heating in tho church. The chairman (Rev. F. J. Parker) outlined the church activities for the year ahead and again bespoke the

warm co-operation of the congregationj He congratulated the ladies on their splendid work during the year and on their work that evening in such well laden and beautifully decorated tables. The church enters the new year under happy auguries and faces the worl* ahead with faith and courage. Football Club’s Dance In spite of the adverse weather conditions, quite a large number were present at the United Valley Football club’s dance in the town hall on Thursday evening. An energetic committee, under the direction of the secretary, Air W. J. Dinnan, and assisted by the ladies, had spared no effort in making the arrangements, with tho result that the function proved a most enjoyable one. The hall was tastefully decorated with streamers of red and black, tho club’s colours. A popular item was a Alonte Carlo fox-trot, the winners being Aliss Ward and Air Bert Eardie. Excellent music was provided by Larkin’s orchestra, extras being played by Aliss do Alalmanche and Messrs Cornfoot, de Malmanche and I.ees. An excellent supper was provided, the club being indebted to those ladies who assisted in the dispensing of it. Dancing was continued to a late hour. Alessrs A. de Malmanche, junr, and J. A. McDonell were M.C.’s. Personal A welcome is extended to Mr and Mrs Fenwick and family, who have arrived in Ashhurst. Air Fenwick wili take over the headmastership of _tho school at the conclusion of the holidays.
