THE COMPETITIONS

Again Draw targe Audiences VOCAL AND PIANO SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED As tho eighth annual festival of the Alanawatu Competitions Society draws to its close, public interest is being not only sustained but increased. At morning, afternoon, and particularly evening sessions yesterday, there were excellent attendances which were fully justified by the interesting programmes presented. Last evening both the piano and vocal scholarships were awarded, Aliss J. Shield of Patea annexing instrumental honours and Aliss H. Crysell of Wanganui being awarded honours in the vocal section. The test dance was also decided but despite tho number of competitors appearing, the judge, Miss Constance McDonald, expressed her disappointment with tho standard shown and awarded second place only. One of tho most interesting sections given during the festival came at the cud of the evening session when quite a number of the audience had already withdrawn. This was tho prepared speech, in which Mr. Mountjoy of Wellington dealing with “The Destiny of tho Pacific” gave a most ablo and convincing address in the short time at his disposal. One would have liked to have heard more of Air. Alountjoy and also of Air. To Aui Pitama who took second place in this section.
