PALMERSTON NORTH’S NEW LIBRARY
TO BE OPENED EARLY IN JUNE.
I go into my library and all history unrolls before me”—Alex. Smith. Were it not that we cease to wonder at familiar things, we should feel that a library full of delightful books was the very home of magic. All times, all places, all men, are there brought close to us. The best men and women who have lived are around us on the shelves that we might receive their thoughts—thoughts that charm by their truth, nobilitv, and sweetness. Again, we have in books the most convenient, record of world happenings. Further they are the readiest means of disseminating information, a powerful force in awakening thought and inspiring mankind with new aims. The man, therefore, who is in possession of books, may count himself wealthy, but what of the community which is endowed with a library? Palmerston North has been blessed
with a treasure house of literature, the value of which has been fully realised by the citizens, but one perhaps is apt to forget that no brake can be claimed on the wheels of literary progress. . The time came when Palmerston North’s library was incapable or housing the increasing number of volumes, newspapers and magazines, md with it, the opportunity to erect a more commodious building in such a manner as to inflict no burden on the ratepayers. The chance was seized, and to-day the town has a structure of which it can be justly proud. From an architectural point of view the new library is a handsome addition to the eastern side of the Square. The brilliantly lighted and well displayed shops of the ground floor and vicinity, have given this locality an attractiveness comparable with other shopping areas in town.
