He hoped that they would do real good work together just as the "Happy Family’’ had done. Tho assistant-secretary for the Fire Brigade Sports gala, Mr. D. W. Wilton, forwarded 14s 7d, being 10s per cent of the gate takings at tne gala held on the Recreation ground. Cr. P. R. W. T. Brown and carried. Grant to Plunket Society. The Pahiatua branch of tho Plunket Society wrote asking the Council for a grant towards the upkeep of the women’s rest room. Appreciation was expressed of the previous grants. The town clork pointed out that the last grant was of £lO made in June last. Tho Mayor said that the work of the Society was a labour of love with the ladies, who had to provide a large portion of the maintenance money required. A grant of the same amount as last year, he thought, could again be made. On the motion of Crs. Tulloch and Murch, a resolution was passed making a grant of £lO to the society. Finance. "The difference is due to tho large credit in the interest account and heavy traffic fees received and not paid out at 30th April, 1927. This year there is a debit in the interest account owing to the credit balances from special rates and interest on fixed deposits having run ouit and it will bo necessary to collect increased special rates to pay the charges on. the loans." The annual report and balance sheet of the Domain showed a credit of £ll9 19s 3d. A copy of a resolution "unanimously passed at a public meeting held in the King’s theatre on March 22., when there was an attendance of close on 300 people thereat" was received from Mr D. Moriarty, "convenor of the meeting." Tho resolution read: "That this public meeting of citizens of Pahiatua calls upon tho incoming Pahiatua Borough council to treat as a matter of urgency and pass a by-law prohibiting all hawkers from entering the Borough of Pahiatua for the purposes of hawking." The Mayor suggested that the letter be referred to the Finance committee for a report. Cr. P. Tulloch said he had no doubt that the business people had a grievance as far as the hawkers of fruit and other things were concerned. The Mayor: "A lot of them are a nuisance. ’' Cr. Tulloch: "And their prices are not lower when you consider the quality of the stuff they sell." The Mayor: "If the council went into the question of new by-law 3 it ' might as well embody this. We can also make a by-law dealing with a particular matter if we wish to, but it would take 9 or 10 months before it came into operation." The matter was referred to the Finance committee for a report.
