CHRYSANTHEMUMS IN FINE DISPLAY

Flower Show

EXHIBITS FROM FAR AND NEAR

PLEA FOR PUBLIC SUPPORT. Chrysanthemums and dahlias predominated at tho flower show held in the Empire hall on Saturday under the auspices of the Palmerston North Horticultural Society. Entries for the various classes came forward well and from as far away as Wanganui, Levin, Pahiatua, Halcombe and Rongotea, Judges. Chrysanthemums, Mr. A. Gibson (Marton); decorative, Mrs W. ML Clark (Levin); vegetables, Mr. T. Webb (Palmerston North); domestic; Mrs A. K. Drew (Sanson); fruit, Mr A. J. Shailer. Stewards. Mesdames R. A. McKenzie, S. Bayliss, H. Langford, A. W. Just, A. J. Shailer, Miss Dawick, Messrs W. Bond, G. H. Dawick, L. R. Bryant, W. H. Chapman, J. Balsillie. The display was opened by Mr. J. A. Nash, M. P. who was introduced to patrons by Mr. Jas. Wallace, vicepresident and donor of the Wallace cup for competition amongst cottage gardeners.

Mr. Nash remarked that tho citizens of Palmerston North should be grateful to the committee of tho Horticultural Society for its efforts. Its activities were not backed up altogether .as they should be and one would not have been surprised to learn that tho society had decided not to carry on. It spoko well for its oUthusiasm that it still held on. What was wanted was more honorary members. Mr Nash also referred to the distinction Palmcrstpn North had earned for itself with its gardens, especially the esplanade and racecourse, both well known beauty spots. Palmerston North was designated the garden city of New Zealand and many visitors came to the town solely to see tho gardens. Mr. Wallace had taken a keen interest in tho welfare of the society and had donated a cup for competition. There had only been nine entries for last year, whereas there might easily have been 50, considering the many beautiful homes there were in Palmerston North. Mr. Wallace deserved the best of thanks for tho kindly interest he had always taken in the society and tho cup competition. Mr Nash concluded by wishing the society the best of success in tho future and hoped tho townspeople would rally behind it and so give tho committee further encouragement, so that Palmerston North could stage one of the leading flower shows in New Zealand.

Mr Nash then presented the Wallace cup to Mrs J. L. Weightman, who holds the trophy for one year. Champion Blooms.
