MELANESIAN MISSION STEAMER’S MISHAP
TRADERS WILL TAKE SUPPLIES.
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night Major H. S. Robinson, general sec* $ retary of the Melanesian Mission, says that the mishap to the Southern Cross will not only disorganise the supplies to the station, but means a serious loss to the mission. The Southern Cross is to be disposed of shortly, and is to be replaced by two small auxiliary schooners which will operate exclus* ively in the mission waters. This will necessitate the severance of direct com* munication with New Zealand. It i i confidently anticipated that greater; efficiency will result, and that ther# will be a substantial saving of money; spent in the transport. The goods required by the mission will be loaded at Sydney on the regular; trading steamers and landed at the twd distributing centres—one in the souths probably in the New Hebrides, th« other in tho north, probably in the Solomons, from which places the schooners will pick up the goods. This change will not take place till after the last voyage of the Southern Cross in 1931. In the meantime plans, i specifications, prices, etc., are being de* tailed for tho building of the schooa* ors. It is hoped that these vessels will bo built in New Zealand. The cost will be somewhere about £20,000.
