ORPHEUS SOCIETY’S SACRED CONCERT
IN AID OF R.S.A. The sacred concert at the Opera Houso last evening, staged by the Palmerston North Orpheus Society in aid of tho funds of tho E.S.A., attracted a crowded house. The performance, which was a*selected one for the occasion, was greatly enjoyed by the audience and unstinted applause greeted tho presentation of each item. The Orpheus Society appeared in four part songs, “ Eeccssional ” “Oft in the Stilly Night,” “Land of Hope and Glory,” and “Pilgrims’ Chorus.” The Orpheus Society is under the baton of Mr. T. P. Henderson and has stood by the E.S.A. for a number of years. The solists were Misses N. Whalley, who sang “A Bequest” and “The Wind”; Miss D. Morgan, whose songs were entitled “Pale Moon” and “To a Miniature”; Miss D. Baker, violinist, who contributed “On Wings of Song”; Mr. H. Tahiwi, of Otaki, who rendered “Waiata Poi,” “Ka Mate,” “Pakakare” and other Maori melodies; and Mr. C. Bell, xylophone expert. All these artists, tho qualities of whoso singing and playing is too well-known to need further praise here, wero obliged to respond to repeated encores. At a suitablo opportunity, Mr. B. J. Jacobs, president of tho R.S.A., expressed the thanks of the association to all who had assisted at the concert and the Poppy Day appeal—the Boy Scouts, who diligently attended the graves and assisted with tho poppy sales; tho ladies' committee in connection with Poppy Day; Father McManus who lent the stall for tho same occasion; tho Orpheus Society and performers at the concert; Mr. W. A. Waters and assistants for managing tho broadcast of th'c Anzae service; Standard Telephones and Cables, Ltd., for free use of apparatus; A. and P. Association, for free use of grounds; Eev. J. M. Stewart for coming up from Christchurch to conduct the service, E. E. Harrison for stage decorations; Palmerston North Pictures, Ltd., for services in connection with the Opera House; Garrison Band; and Mr. L. Brougham, who did a considerable amount of carting gratis. Lastly the E.S.A., was deeply grateful to the public of Palmerston North who had responded to theiT appeals for donations. Tho association was really in a unique position in respect of the help it got from the public of Palmerston North. Mr. Jacobs announced that the collection at the service had amounted to £29 4s Old, and at the concert to £2S 5s 3d.
