SCOTSMAN PRAISES PALMERSTON NORTH
A WELL-KEPT TOWN. “Palmerston North stands out on its own as a well-kept town, ’ ’ was the enthusiastic comment of Mr. Archibald Lawson, of Rockfield, Fife, Scotland, alter being shown round the borough and environs on Saturday morning by Mr. A. Hopwood. Mr Lawson, who is chairman of directors of a drapery concern operating extensively in Great Britain, is at present on a world tour and arrived in Palmerston North on Friday evening with Mr. William Mitchell, of Sydney, a boyhoo-d friend, who is accompanying him through New Zealand. From Palmerston North the visitors proceeded to Taupo where a week’s fishing is to bo indulged in. The visitors were much struck with the layout of the town, the obviously comfortable and well-designed _ homes and, the fine, clean streets which reflected the greatest credit on the municipality. From the point of view of a business man, Mr. Lawson stated that the business houses and shops which he had seen as far as design and the display of goods was concerned, compared more than favourably with anything he had seen elsewhere in Australia or New Zealand. After seeing some of the country handy to Palmerston North, Mr. Lawson expressed the thought that New Zealanders have a particularly fine country to live in, especially the farming community.
