RUSH TO TALK ACROSS OCEAN CROWDS WIRES
AMERICAN TELEPHONE COMPANY ' TO INCREASE FACILITIES—RADIO 1 NET EXPANDS. NEW YORK, Mar. 8. The growing significance of technical [ developments in extending the network of radio and telephone communication throughout tho world has just been, emphasised here in reports by two of tho loading companies in tho communications field. Electrical engineers have been asked to perfect a new transatlantic cable to meet tho growing demand for contin-ent-to-continent telephone cals, Walter S. Gilford, president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, disclosed in his annual report. The present transoceanic telephone facilities aro overloaded, he said. A total of £4,00,000,000 will bo spent by tho American Telephone and Telegraph Company for plant expansion and for tho new cable during the next five years, tho report said. Mr. Gifford disclosed that arrangements aro under way for the establishment of short-wave radio telephone communication between the United States and the Argentine. The Radio Corporation of America, in tho annual report by Owen D. Young, chairman of tho board, and Gen. James G. Harbord, president, disclosed that radio scrvico between tho United States and Chile, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Mexico, and China will be opened by that company during 1929. During 1928. the report adds, foreign stations at Venezuela, China, Canada, Portugal, Australia, Liberia, Culm and ' tho Dutch West Indies. '
