RAILWAY CROSSING CLOSED TO TRAFFIC

REPLACING PERMANENT WAY. The railway crossing in tho Square at the Post Office side was closed to traffic last night. The Railway department started early yesterday morning to make the most of the Sabbath quietness to replace the metals and sleepers on the Now Plymouth lino at this crossing. It was a job that had to be completed, once commenced and the 11 gangers spent an unenviable afternoon, drenched to the skin getting the permanent way in order. .With the rain, it was impossible to consolidate tho ballast between the metals and it soon became a mud pool. To kc-ep vehicular traffic off the crossing tho lino was roped off and a watchman kept on duty throughout the night.
