IN THE POHANGINA

County Council Meets When the Pohangina County council met on Saturday, there were present Crs. A. Strahan (chairman), C. Brooking, T. Close, M. Arbon, W. Stewart, T. Pratt and W. Howell. Correspondence. Messrs Boddy Bros., TTmutoi, requested that the council erect about 12 chains of fencing on the edge of the Apiti-Norsewood road.—The work is to be done. The Public Works department advised that applications for grants in connection with road works would close on June 8. Applications were to be prepared as early as possible and numbered in accordance with tho urgency of the works.—Received. Mr. P. F. Miller (Tabic Flat) Apiti requested that the council send a roadman to clean up Lyon’s track, as same was in a bad condition. Tho writer also offered to put in a day on tho work. —Proposal was agreed to. The Hon. J. G. Cobbc wrote asking for information regarding the Tunipo track, stating that he had been aporoaclicd several times by settlers with reference to obtaining a grant for its improvement—The information is to be supplied. " ’ Mr. A. E. Dougherty wrote concerning the condition of the water tables on the Apiti-Kimbolton deviation and a Tequost that a culvert be put in to prevent earth being washed away.— Referred to the engineer. Sanction for the raising of a loan of £550 for a workman’s cottage in the Mangacikopiko riding was . received from the Treasury'department. Engineer’s Report. The engineer (Mr. D. Watson) reported as follows: Awahou riding: Very good progress has been made with the work of crushing and carting out metal for the main highway. The new machine is turning out a large quantity and a fine sample of metal. The two motor trucks have been kept busy carting out. The council’s team have been employed for several days, widening out and straightening tho main road near No. I line! Some of the decking planks, which are very much decayed, on Whitehead’s bridge will bo replaced with jarrnh timber, most of which has been taken from bridges that have been replaced by concrete structures. Coal Creed: A fair quantity of riverbed metal was carted by the motor track and spread on the main road at Ngaputahi. Some metal was also carted to build up the approaches to Parson’s Ford bridge. The deviation work on Apiti-Kimbolton main highway has been Completed and a. total of 400 yards of gravel was put out on the 12 chains of new road.

Mangaono: A start was made with tho culvert on the Ferry road. Aj 24 feet by 30 inches concrete pipe culvert was set in on a concrete foundation. When the concrete walls are built and the filling put in, the old bridge, which is unsafo for heavy traffic can be taken up. The large grader was used for trimming up Finnis track and the main highway. Several of the bad bends on Taonui-Rnumai highway have been straightened out and some of the ccmont culverts lengthened out. Mangapikopiko: The formation work and draining of MeNae’s road has been completed and 100 yards of gravel carted out, but owing to rain this work had to bo discontinued as the formation was much too soft to stand carting over. Somo repair gravel was put out on tho main highway, and rubbish from the footpaths carted off. Pohangina: A fair amount of repair gravel was carted and spread near, Ngaputahi. The largo grader was run over tho main highway and a start made to clean out the drain. Tho permanent surfaceman at Te Awa has been employed cleaning water channels, etc. Tamaki: A start has been made with the heavy grader at, shaping up the main road, and whilst the teams are in the Tiding, I would suggest that some of the abrupt bends on this road he straightened out. A cement pipe culvert was put in near Digger’s Creek, and some of the overhanging scrub cut back. Umutoi: Two pipe enlverts for replacing those of wood have boen put in and general road maintenance work attended to by the permanent surfaceman during the past month. Treasurer’s Report.

During the past year, we have had two additional lengths of road (seven miles and five miles respectively) declared' main highways, and wo arei in hopes of getting tho'Pohangina Valley highway extended during tho coming 5 The amount of subsidy received from the Highways board and credited to £236 3s 2d; Coal Creek, £96 13s lOd, Mangaone, £226 17s 8d; Mangapiko. £67 14s lOd; Pohangina, £2l 3s lUci, Tamaki, £3 16s 4d; and on account of plant, credited to general account, £599 Is 7d; total, £1254 11s 3d. Our share of heavy traffic fees amounted to £392 11s Bd. We have completed tho construction of Hunt s bridge (£383 17s 2d) and Pollocks road culvert (£l3O 33s 4d), on which works we have received government subsidies amounting to £264= 10s 9a. We have also completed the Apiti deviation at a cost of £787 13s, on which we will receive a subsidy of £ tor * up to £450, the greater part of which has already been paid. „ Chains of new road have been formed at Cave creek, the cost of which has been defrayed by the Public Works department, and we are now en g a S?“ in completing the formation ot the northern end of the Apiti-Norsewood road, on which work we will receive a giant from' the government of £25U._ 8 During the 12 months under review several bad bends have been straightened out and tho roads widened and improved in various parts of tne county. Tho new stone crushing plant at Rau mai is proving a very groat success being capable of turning kgj quantities of a very fine class of metal, which is really not crushed, but broken, and in consequence; m a more smtab metal than that turned out by the old Tve 5 are just now on tbe point of starting the erection of roadmen s dwe lings in tho Mangapikopiko and Tamaki ridings. The engineer has prepared plans which have already been approved by tho Public Works departTtSs gratifying that after wing out so many improvements, the finances arc in a very satisfactory state.
