MAKERUA DRAINAGE

£13,045 OF BATES WILL BE LEVIED NEXT YEAR. Bates amounting to £13,045 13s 7d will be levied by the Makerua Drainage Board for the year ending Maiek 31, 1930. The amounts are comprised as follow:—General rates (maximum), £3213; special rate No. 1, £203 3s lid; special rate No. 2, £63-9s 4d; special rate No. 3, £BB 7s; special rate No. 4, £9S 16s 8d; special rate No. 5, £l3 11s sd; special rato No. 6, £9026 0s 6d; special rate No. 7, £339 4s 9d. Estimates of the expenditure, which it is proposed to enter into during the ensuing year in connection with its activities, were submitted to the Drainage Board on Thursday, when it was stated that the maximum general rate which could be struck was l-)d in the £.l on the total rateable property. On the basis of the valuation at March 31, 1928, less reductions in values during the year, the estimated rateable value was £338,299 for class A, £156,140 for class B, and £19,685 for class C, making a total of £514,124. It M'as pointed out that a maximum rate on’that basis would produce £3213. The rates levied for 1928-29 were £2028 18s 7d on class A at 1 13-30ihs of a penny, £703 12s Id on class B at 1 9-120ths; and £59 11s 8d on class C at 43-60ths, .making a total of £2792 2s 4d. Estimates were adopted providing for administration expenses amounting to £947, maintenance of drains £1095 10s lOd, and contribution to Horowhenua County Council for Kara bridge £2ou (after allowance for £284 10s 6d met out of special rate). . River protection costs were estimated to involve a total expenditure of £550, while £4OO was provided for the protection of the Kara bank.

The total estimated expenditure, ether than required for the interest on special loans, was £3142 10s lOd. The chairman (Mr. H./J. T. Hume) stated that unless absolutely necessary protection work was neglected, there would be insufficient money to enable drain deepening to be undertaken this year.
