Units Inspected by Major Sandle, N.Z.S.C. *‘ NO FAULT TO FIND ’ ’ The Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Technical School cadet companies ,which have heen under canvas on the Showgrounds for the past week, were inspected yesterday by Major S. G. Sandle, N.Z.S.C., at the conclusion of their week’s training. The steady and soldierly bearing of the infantry units, with the High School artillery section, drew praise from their officers, while Major Sandle, at the conclusion of his inspection, told a reporter that he had no fault to find and that 'he had beon greatly impressed by tbe steadiness on parade of all units, while his inspection of cookhouses, tent and horse lines and the general camp lay-out had shown everything to be in order. ' All units had shown great improvement as a result of the camp. Major G. G. Hancox, camp commandant, also expressed his satisfaction with the improvement brought about by the camp training. Gamp Competitions

During the course of the camp, a competition was conducted amongst the four platoons of the High School company on the lines inaugurated at the last camp, when the school company was under canvas at Foxton racecourse in 1927. Points were allocated for steadiness on battalion parade, neatness of uniforms and tidiness of the lines. The Albion platoon, com. manded by Lieut. E. J. Werry, proved the wanner with an aggregate of 168 points, Gordon platoon, under Lieut. P. O. Skoglund, being second with 1593 points. Phoenix platoon secured 156 points and Kia Ora 1521 points. A prize donated for the best tent in the school company was won by No. 2 tenlj, Albion platoon, and was in charge of Opl. Delaney. A special prize donated by Lieut. Straubel for the best tent in the Phoenix platoon was won by No. 2 tent, in charge of Cpl. Gibson. Camp Entertainments

Despite the fact that the camp was held in the very heart of the town, it was quite self-contained and a world unto itself. No night leave was granted, but in the Y.M.C.A. hall under the main stand, entertainments were organised every evening and met with excellent support. On Saturday evening, when the camp commenced, Mr C. Cateir led the boys in a joyous community sing-song which proved so popular that it was repeated again on Thursday evening. On the Sunday evening church parade in the morning, Mr and Mrs Stan Kingston, with a party of visitors, conducted a service from the Y.M. hymn books. On Monday evening, an excellent concert party, organised by Mr C. Taylor, received an enthusiastic reception, while on Wednesday the Junior Orchestral society staged a most enjoyable concert. On Thursday evening, Mr Vic. French, of Flock House, entertained a full house with an interesting lantern lecture on the Panama Canal, while last evening, as a grand finale, the Garrison band provided a concert. The boys’ leisure hours were splendidly catered for by the Y.M.C.A. authorities, whose rest-room and facilities were in charge of the camp padre, the Rev. H. S. Kenney, and Mr T. Twigge. The canteen was run by masters. and boys of the High School company, the proceeds going to this school. The camp will break np this morning, when over 300 boys will doff khaki to resume “civvies.”
