Seventeen Qualify For Championship MANAWATU TOURNEY OPENS The Manawatu Golf Club ’* Easter tournament was commenced on the Hokowhitu links on Saturday under ideal golfing conditions, except that in the morning the going was a little heavy, as a result of Friday's rain. Play was conducted over the newlyformed course which is acknowledged now to be one of the finest in New Zealand. The result was that visitors and Manawatu players set out from the same mark, as it were, the course •being equally strange to all. The average gross score returned was a good deal above the par of the course, but that was to be expected, seeing that players were up against new obstacles. Players were present from Napier, Masterton, Miramar, Wanganui, Alarton, Dannevirke, Feilding, Pahiatua, Shannon, Levin and Wellington. The elimination rounds for the championship and Hokowhitu handicap were played over 36 holes, the best 16 gross scores counting for the former and the next best for the handicap competition. Medal Rounds. In conjunction with the two qualifying rounds, trophies were given for the first and second nett scores. The winners in the morning were A. Lawry .(Napier) 83—10—73 and J.' P. Hornabrook (Masterton), 81—7—74. M. C. Fenwick (Marton) was next with 82—7—75. .The afternoon medal was won by C. Armstrong (Wanganui), 82—14—68 with E. Clark (Levin) next 82—9—73. ' Notes on Play. J. P. Hornabrook's gross score was 81—37 'out and 44 in. He fell off in play towards the end of the match. M. Cy Fenwick returnee! with 82 gross—4o out and 42 in. H.' H. Hutchison (Manawatu) was next best gross scorer with 83—42 out. 41 in. T. H. Horton (Mastcrton), New Zealand’s amateur champion, made, a disappointing exhibition with a new kit of clubs. He went out in 40 and came in in 43. His partner, A. Seifert (Manawatu) submitted a gross return of 84—44 out and 40 in. The best gross score in the afternoon was brought in by H. H. Hutchison who improved on liis morning play considerably. He went out in 37 which is only one above par, and came home in 40, making his total 77 and grand total of 160 tho best for the day. Hutchison's afternoon card read—Out: 4 4435553 4—37. In: 4 5 4 6 4 4 4 4 o—4o. T. H. Horton made a brighter showing in the afternoon, returning a gross score of 79. He went out in 36 (equal to par) but like most of tho o+ber players, fell away in the second half and took 43 to come in. J. E. Hornabrook had his handicap increased from 7 to 6 for the afternoon round. He played very consistent golf and finished With the salne nett score as he had m the morning, namely 74.
