LILY COPPLESTONE FAILS IN ATTEMPT TO SWIM HARBOUR

Rough, Cold and Chappy NARROW ESCAPE FROM STEAMER COLLISION Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Miss Lily Copplcstone failed to-day in an effort to swim Wellington Harbour, doing about three miles and being in the, water about 24 hours. The water was too rough and cold and choppy. She was accompanied part of the way by Miss K. Miller, Miss Lambert and G. Rose. Miss Copplestone was not distressed when taken out of the water, but the accompanying boat was not large enough to afford her any protection as it went along on the windward side, Tho day itself was very cold and unsuitable for distanco swimming. The Eastbourne Borough Council’* Muritai, which took passengers to view tho race, had difficulty in getting clear of the ferry wharf. It was swung by the wind on to the Wahine and grazed along half of that vessel's length before getting clear. There was no damage to cither vessel. A motor launch that was also going across watching tho swim fouled a rope round the propellor.
