How They Ran

A Pact Kept. Locarno kept faith with his army of backers in the Hurdles and won comfortably, though narrowly, from Red Bank. The race was a jog most of the way, with Locarno making his own pace. Red Bank made a run from third place crossing the top the second time round, but when spoken to, the Elysian gelding pushed him back and again in the straight, Red Bank’s gamest efforts were unavailing. Ho finished a neck behind the winner, with Royal Acre in third place, two and a-half lengths away. Airtight was fourth, in which place he ran practically throughout behind Locarno, Royal Acre and Red Bank, and Harrogate and Onward were next. Red Bank’s effort was a good one, but he was outclassed. Royal Acre showed something like his real form. Inflame Dies Away. After getting the best of the hopout and leading to within 50 yards of the post, Inflame died down to a trot and allowed Richfield and Coolmint to pass him. Inflame had been running out six furlongs well on the track and with half a furlong off the distance, he looked like delivering the goods, but his notorious unreliability, even with the assistance of "Snowy” Morris, was again demonstrated. From a straggling start, Inflame, Whakaaru and Airway were first out, and into the straight, the leader piloted Airway, Callapat and Richfield. The last-named took the outside running 50 yards from home and finished strongly a clear two lengths ahead of Coolmint, which followed Richfield in his run to beat Inflame by the better part of a length. Fee Simple was a close fourth, White Ringlet was fifth and Whakaaro and Ali Baba next. The Grand Acre —Fee Simple bracket was a £2O better fancy than Coolmint, with Inflame a further £IOO behind. The winner was fourth favourite and paid a substantial price. Bank Note was never prominent and Grand Acre also \failed to materialise. Star Area Another. • With Gold Cure and Manly out, the Manchester Handicap field was reduced to six runners. Star Area was a short*

priced favourite, carrying nearly £4OO more of the public purse than .Merry Damon. Joy Bird was a well-supported third fancy and the others were at a good price. Joy Bird was the pacemaker and led Star Area, Avro, Briar Root, Orazone and Merry Damon out of the staight in that order. Entering the back, Joy Bird was half a length ahead of the top-weight, with Briar Root and Avro together next and the other pair a couple of lengths away. Avro then dropped back to last, Orazonc and Merry Damon closing in on the leading pair at the turn into the straight. Joy Bird held his advantage till 30 yards from the post, when he was overwhelmed in a splendid finish. Orazone made a great bid for the honours, but Star Area beat her by half a length. Merry Damon was a neck away third and Joy Bird a similar distance back in fourth place. Briar Root was right up also, but Avro was well beaten. Orazone was taken a long way round before being straightened up, but the favourite had an indubitable win. Malahat the Malden. Malahat was made a red-hot order for the Maiden event and homo ho rolled, after lying handy behind the leading.trio. Habit and Dawn o' Day were more fractious than the others, but they got away to' a fair sturt, Wine Tray, Oral, Latakia and Malahat being first to show out, Some Acre coming up to the winner as they ran to the ton turn. Into the straight, the leading division was still undisturbed, with Gambler and Warzone showing up. Malahat, once asked to go, responded in no uncertain fashion and won by half a length from Oral, with Gambler a similar distance back. Some Acre was fourth and Clover Leaf fifth. The last-named, a good-looking filly by Callaghan—Compel, was well supported as second favourite on her private reputation, but she did not begin too well. , A Good Return. There was a big call for number ones by "Thrifty” punters on the Onepuhi Hack, with Kawhakina £242 less in favour, while Atholspear, for some unaccountable reason, was relegated to third position on the tote. Calamino and Thrift were the pacemakers all the way round. Kilorell, Aurora Borealis and Warflamo were behind them and entering the back, the order was Aurora Borealis, Kawhakina and Kilorell. On the bend Kawhakina and Atholspear were third and fourth respectively and into the straight the order was the same. They approached the post in close formation, and another great finish saw Atholspear thrust home by a head from Kawhakina, with Calamine a neck away. Thrift was half a length further back, then came Aurora Borealis, Balloon, Warfiame and Kilorell. The scratchings were Zippor, Gasnapper, Acred, First Ruler, Merry Mixture. The Raider all the Way.

All nine acceptors went into the starter’s hands for the Mangaone Handicap, and The Raider was. given place of honour on the tote with £165 more cash than Royal Damon. Benzora and Keddar also were wanted by not a few. The Raider got the hopout and led all the way, winning comfortably by one and a-haif lengths from Dobbin. The order along the back was The Raider, Dobbin, Ridgemount and Benzora. Ridgemount was a handy third as they swept into tho straight, with Limited and Royal Damon behind Benzora, and Whenuanui and Some Red, which left later, together in the rear. Dobbin made a bold bid for the chief honours, but the son of Hupana was unbeatable. Benzora was half a length behind D obbin, then came Keddar, Royal Damon and Limited. The fact that he did two ticks over 1.14, making his own running, added to the merit of tho winner’s performance. Royal Black Arrives. A surprise winner in Royal Black arrived in the Taonui Hack Handicap, and paid close on double figures, Warfille was at little better than evens, Desert Lad carrying £4lO less. Whisogne showed the way out from the barrier, with Royal Black and Warfille next. Patearoa moved into third place a furlong further on, while the favourite dropped back. Crossing the top, Whisogne was leading Royal Black, with Acred, Desert Lad and Patearoa together. There was no change as they straightened up. At the half distance, Royal Black took command and won by half a length from tho hard-ridden favourite. Acred was a couple of lengths further down the course, then came Whisogno, Patearoa, Desert Lad and First Ruler. This is Royal Black’s first win, but it will not be the last. Jeanette the Last. A big pool, with over £2OO more than was invested on the open sprint, was distributed among the six runners in the Haleombo Handicap, Manly being at a cramped price. Vivo was paying more than twice as much. Jeanette won well, after being up in front throughout the test. Jeanette, Manly and Vivo were the first division out of the straight, with Road Hog next. Sovena had charge at the half-mile, but Jeanette was pushed up again and tho order into tho straight was Jeanette, Sovena, Manly and Vivo, with Road Hog trying to catch them the long way round. Jeanette never looked like being headed in the run to the judge and beat Vivo by a couple of lengths. Manly was third, three lengths behind the winner, then came Discourse, Sovena and Road Hog. No excuse could be offered for Manly. The winner showed she must have had a few pounds in hand when she beat inferior fields nearer homo. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY.
