Bunnythorpe.

From Our Own Correspondent. Seldom has there been such a large and representative gathering as attended the farewell evening to Air and. Mrs. J. 0. Webber on Thursday evening at the Public Hall. Mr H. T. Maxwell, chairman of the School Committee, said tho large audience present spoke volumes for the high esteem in which Mr and Mrs. Webber were held. Residents ail regretted that owing to the grado of the school being lowered, Mr Webber had been transferred to Wanganui. He, Mr Webber , had set an exceedingly high standard in every way at the school, and had done his duty without fear or favour. The results spoke for themselves and Bunuythorpc had reason to bo proud of the splendid reports obtained by the school under Mr Webber’s headmastership. They all felt that Mr Webber would in timeoccupy a high position in his profession, and Bunuythorpo would watch his advancement with pleasure and interest. Mr L. Pascoe, secretary of the School Committee, also spoke °f Mr Webber s fine work at the school. Mr J. Clevely, for the parents, thanked Mr Webber for the interest he had taken in the children and his helpful suggestions in all matters connected with the school. He congratulated Mr Webber on his promotion and wished Mr and Mrs. Webber and family every success. Mr W. Andrew, president of tho Tennis Club, spoke highly of Mr Webber’s work in teaching the younger members of the district, thus building up a strong team for the club. Mr J. Smith, president of tho Sports Club, also thanked Mr Webber for the help he had been to tho club while a member of the committee, particularly in his efforts to retain the Faulkner Cup for tho school. Mr W. B. Duthic, Miniature Rifle Club, said that Mr Webber had been instrumental in reviving interest . in this club, which was now in a flourishing condition, chiefly through Mr Webber’s work. Ho wished Mr and Mrs. Webber every success and happiness in their now home.

On rising to reply Mr Webber was greeted with cheers, all present joining heartily in the singing of, “For he’s a jolly good fellow.” He said it was a great pleasure to Mrs. Webber and himself to see such a large gathering present and ho only hoped that he deserved some of the good things the speakers had said. He had always tried to do his best for tho children, and did not consider tho results only on the passes that were obtained from year to year. AYith regard to the school itself, the committee had been very hard-working, and nearly everything needed in tho new school had now been obtained. One thing which he strongly advocated were swimming baths, which ho hoped to hear Bunnythorpo would have in the near future. Ho had enjoyed his connection with the various sports clubs, particularly the Miniature Rifle Club, which was his special hobby, and he sincerely thanked all the speakers for their kind remarks. Mr Maxwell then presented Mr and Mrs. Webber with a very handsome case of cutlery from tho residents, with the very best wishes for their success and happiness in wanganui. The annual meeting of the Methodist Ladies ’ Guild was held in the school room on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a very good attendance, including several new members. The annual report and balance sheet were presented, showing a very good credit balance. Officers for the coming year were elected and the meeting concluded with a social afternoon tea.
