OROUA RUGBY FOOTBALL SUB-UNION
The annual general meeting of the above sub-union was held at Kimbolton recently. Thero were present Messrs J. Watt (chairman'), G. ft. McKenzie (Ttangiwnhia), A. Brown, T. K. Graiue (Kiwitca); A. E. Stackhouse, • Thomson (Kimbolton), W. T. Pratt, J. Cantwell (Apiti), and the secretary (Mr. D. Evcriss). 1 The annual report of the Oroua SubUnion for the 192 S season is as follows: — In presenting the report and balance sheet for thte past season, we must, express our appreciation of the. services of all the club delegates, for it is owing to the liberal manner in which they transported tho players, practically free from cost to the Sub-Union,, and there loyalty generally tat we are able to show a rather handsome balance on “the right side of the ledger.” The Senior Competition: . Senior football was unfortunately particularly weak. Nominations were received from four teams, Kimbolton, Apiti, Waituna and Kangiwahia. The Kimbolton team, however, was unable to maintain its strength and was consequently forced to drop out early in the season. This left a triangular competition which was eventually won by the A-piti' Club. j The Junior Competition: Six teams nominated for this competition, Apiti, Kangiwahia, Kimbolton, Kiwitca, Colyton and Waituna. This proved the best competition of the four and the shield w r as won by the Waituna team. The third grade competition was very weak indeed. It was with considerable difficulty that two teams were mustered, Kimbolton and Kiwitea combining to make one and Waituna mustering tho other. The shield was won by the latter club. The primary schools’ competition was also very half-hearted. Tho Northern group was unable to raiso a team, but the East group nominated one, leaving the qjimber of teams nominated the same as last season. The South group however, found it was unable to carry on and dropped out afted the first one or two matches, thus the competition also became a triangular one. The shield was won by the Central group.. Board Cup: Competition for this cup commenced on Juno 10, and as only three teams were competing, the executive decided to play two rounds. Theso ended with Apiti and Waituna level and a final match resulted in Waituna's again carrying homo the trophy. Mitchell Cup: This competition commenced on June 30 with six teams competing. The shield was also w*on by Waittuna. Seven-a-Side: This fixture was held on August 4th., and was highly successful. Nominations wore received from 32 teams (11 senior, 13 junior, 2 3rd. grade and 6 schools) but owing, no doubt to the unpropitious weather, only 22 teams materialised. The fixture
was again carried through smoothly and withoul any unnecessary delay and was completed by 4 p.m. The following are the wiuniug teams of the various events: Senior: Kangiwahia; Junior, Kiwitea A; Third Grade, Waituna; Schools, Oroua Downs. The ladies of the district again came to our asistancc and conducted refreshment booths ou the grounds, which again showed a handsome profit.
Ecresentativc Matches: The representative teams, both senior and junior were very weak and out of six matches played (4 senior and 2 junior) we arc unable to record a win. The following is a list of the matches played: Senior: June 21, v To Kawau, at Palmerston North, 105t225;3 —5; July 28, v To Kawau at Kimbolton; August 1, v Manawatu B, at Feilding, lost 26—10; August 5, v Rangitikei at Kimbolton, lost 24 —8. Junior: August 1, v Rangitikei, at Marton, lost 22—8; Auguct 11 v Te Kawau at Sanson, lost 20 —6. Wallace Cup: The match for this cup was played at Feilding on August 1, and resulted as shown above. Te Kawau Sub-Union entered the competition for the first time and succeeded in defeating Manawatu B. and so now hold this trophy. Bebbington Cup: Owing to our representative team being of such a low standard wc did not challenge for this trophy.
Finance: As we mentioned at the commencement of our report owing to the services of the club delegates, and a policy of rigid economy throughout the season, our balance sheet shows a decided improvement on that of last year. Gate receipts are slightly below those of last season, as also are the takings at the seven-a-side booths, but on the other hand, entertainment expenses stand at £8 against approximately £3O last season; travelling expenses at £ll 10s against £35, and managers’ expences nil against £6 10s. Also during the season a concert party was organised by our Kimbolton supporters, which travelled to various parts of tho district, and was responsible for £ll of our credit balance. Insurance Fund: This fund continues to work out on the wrong side of the ledger. This season our actual receipts amounted to £25, whilst wo were called upon to meet claims amounting to £39 6s Bd. We commenced the treason with a credit balance of £lB 16s 4d, thus the fund is now left with only £4 9s 8d in hand. In conclusion, the retiring executive sincerely thanks all those who assisted in any way to make the season’s football a success, and hopes that the incoming committee will meet with similar support, and that 1929 will be a red-letter season in the annals of the Sub-Union. The report and balance sheet for the past year were read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, lion. J. G. Cobbe; president, Mr. J. Watt; vice-presidents, Messrs A. E. Stackhouse, N. V. Shannon, T. E. Crainc and A. E. Bartlett; secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. Everiss; delegate to Manawatu District
Council, Mr. D. Everiss; representative on Manawatu District Council, Mr. K. W. Eglinton. It was resolved ns follows:—That the appointment of committees be held over until the next meeting; that the senior and junior competitions commence on Saturday, April 27, nominations to close on April 20; that the secretary be instructed to write the Te Kawau sub-union with reference to this sub-union’s letter of September 19 re Wallace Cup fixtures. Mr. Stackhouse gave notice of his intention to move at the next meeting as follows:—“That the accident insurance fund be dropped and the present credit balanco of £4 9s 8d be transferred to the general fund. ’ ’
