The many friends of Mr. Kod Koss and family, of Eeilding, will regret to hear that Mrs Koss is at present in a private hospital. Mr. J. J. O'Shea, stationmaster at Palmerston North, was taken seriously ill on Sunday evening and was removed to a private hospital for treatment. Mr F. T. Chandler will act as stationmaster during Mr O’Shea’s absence. The friends of Mr W. Kickard, who was injured in the level crossing smash at Monrad street, on Saturday, will bo pleased to learn that his injuries are not so severe as were at first 'feared. He is reported to be making satisfactory progress. Visitors welcomed at yesterday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Kotary club wore Messrs H. Collinson and H. Cunninghamo (Palmerston North). Tho club also decided to send a letter of sympathy to Rotarian W. C. Harrington, a member who has been ordered to Hanmer Springs, following a spell of indifferent health.
Mr. William Cullen, Chief Inspector of Machinery, Chief Surveyor of Ships, and Chief Examiner of Engineers, is to retire shortly, after 25 years in the service of t.hc Marino department. Mr. Cullen was born at Baillieston, County Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1861, and gained his first experience in engineering with tho firm of David Rowan and Son, marine engineers and boilermakers, of Glasgow. Ho came out. to New Zealand as a young man, joining tho service of the Union Steam .Ship Company at Glasgow as junior engineer on tho s.s. Waihora, and making the passage on the steamer’s maiden voyage to Port Chalmers. Ho gradually improved his position in tho company’s service until, in 1595, he was appointed chief engineer, a position which ho held until 1900, when he .retired from the seafaring life and joined tho scrvico of the New Flymouth Producers’ Freezing company as assistant engineer. He remained with the company yntil April, 1904, when he was appointed to the staff of the Inspection of Machinery department, and stationed at Wellington. When, in 1908, a branch was opened at Palmerston North, Mr. Cullen was placed in charge and remained there until he was called to Wellington in July, 1922, as a senior inspector. Upon the retirement of Mr. Hood, in May, 1924, he received the appointment he is now about to resign
