AMUSEMENT TAX HITS AMATEUR TALENT

Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, March 23. Representatives of the I InvercargillAmateur Operatic Society, Invercar-o-ill male chorus and Choral - Union waited on tho Prime Minister this morning. , , Mr. B. C. Galloway stated that the deputation was concerned with the operation of the amusement tax which necessitated such organisations as they represented paying tax if . they engaged soloists from their own town or from other centres, and this despite tho fact that they made little or no profit and that was devoted either to a continuation of their .work or to philanthropic purposes. On tho other hand if soloists were not paid tho organisations were exempt from tho tax. This hit such a town as Invercargill particularly hard since when local talent had been exhausted it was imperative to engage performers from other centres to provide audiences with something. They asked that such organisations as those be exempt from the amusement tax. Replying, Sir Joseph Ward said that a note had been taken of their representations which would be filed for future reference and would bo considered when the question of taxation generally was gone into some time in May.
