CARS CARTED AWAY
TRAFFIC EDLES APPLIED WITH A DERRICK. SHOCK TO MOTORISTS IN NEW YORK. Amid scenes of holiday enthusiasm New York’s drastic new traffic plan was put into effect, and was voted In officials to be au unqualified success. In a large area comprising the whole theatrical district traffic was rigidly controlled at the rush hours of the
evening on which the rules were first fut into effect. Parking and all right and left turns were prohibited, an embargo was laid on commercial vehicles, and taxicabs were not allowed to enter the zone without passengers. The officials said the movement of cars was speeded up at least 50 pc-r cnt., and to the observer tho claim seemed reasonable. Many thousands of persons lined the sidewalks, and cheered or booed the activities of several hundred special policemen who tried to teach the new rules to motorists who had not read the newspapers for months and were outraged to find tliar. they must continue three-quarters of a mile in a direction they did not wish to go. Others were even more indignaut when, having left their cars parked for a few minutes, they returned to find that the police had picked them up with derricks ou lorries and carted them away.
