FEILDING HIGH SCHOOL
WILL ASK HARBOUR BOARD TO DONATE SCHOLARSHIPS. Speaking at a meeting of the Board of Managers of the Feilding Agricultural High School on Wednesday night, the chairman, Mr. H. Tolley, moved that the Wellington Harbour Board bo approached and asked to contribute funds for the establishment of two scholarships, to be tenable at the school. It was within tho memory of all, said Mr. Tolley, that when the school was first mooted, the various local bodies were waited on for funds and they ,gave most generously. They were most good to the school. Recently he noticed that the Wellington Harbour Board had given £SOO towards the cost of the earrilion and had also made a grant of £SOOO towards the national museum and art gallery at Wellington. Feeling that the Harbour Board had so much money to give away the speaker was emboldened to ask the board to give £IOO a year for two scholarships. There was this justification behind the request, (1) that the school, the only one of its kind in tho Dominion, was in the board’s district and (2) that any movement for the benefit of the school must result ultimately in an improved return to the board. If tho board was able to give money for tho causes above mentioned then the speaker felt that it was only a fair and reasonable thing to ask the board to subsidise a new school which was breaking new ground and doing national service. He moved that the application, as outlined, be sent forward. Mr. Williamson seconded the proposal and suggested that the chairman of the board, the Hon. J. G. Cobbc, bo approached to further the matter. Mr. A. IT. Atkinson felt there were difficulties in the way by reason of the fact that the chairman of the board s the member for the district. He favoured waiting to see what action *ho rov r '!-unicnt would take following on the Hon. IT. Atmorc’s visit to the school. Mr. J- Knight reminded the meeting that the Harbour Board made donations to the Feilding, Manawatu and Wairarapa A. and 1“. shows and he considered the proposed application quite in order. . . Mr. A. Campbell ivas of the opinion (lint the funds of the board should be devoted towards improving the port facilities, increasing the service to the producers and lessening costs. The motion was carried.
