THE LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTION
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The appeal addressed to the Electors of Palmerston North over the signature of Messrs. Allerby and Hodgens, two candidates for seats on the Licensing Committee, contains inaccuracies that I wish to correct. They say they are desirous that the Licensing Committee should be a thoroughly representative body, comprising members who will give a measure of consideration to the well being of the workers engaged in the various licensed houses. In justice to the present Committee, who have functioned very satisfactorily, pnd who are seeking rcelcction, I must state that they have insisted that the conditions under which Hotel employees are housed, should be of a high standard. To say that deplorable conditions exist is, in addition to being a gross inaccuracy, a reflection on representatives of the Labour movement of this country, who have agreed, in Conciliation Cooneii, to the provisions embodied in an Industrial Award without reference to the Arbitration Court. Those gentlemen are also wrong when they state that it is many years since an election has been held for this Committee, when, as a matter of fact, there was an Election three years ago. The responsibility of causing the expense of an Election, inconvenience and cessation of business, rests entirely with the two candidates. Yours faithfully, Palmerston North Licensed Victuallers Association F. J. SWINDELL, Chairman. Palmerston North, March 11th., 1928. Labour Candidates Ask Questions (To the Editor.) Sir, —In your issue of Saturday last these is an advertisement on behalf of the existing members of the Licensing Committee. Was this advertisement approved of by all of those members? Also is it a fact that tho cost is not being defrayed by any of thoso gentlemen whose signatures are appended?
If so interested parties are stooping to peculiar tactics to attain their end in tho election of the present committee.
Surely this proves that all is not well with the workers engaged in the trade.
Will Messrs Grant Sim, local secretary of tho Palmerston North Licensed Victuallers’ Association and Mr F. J. Swindell, its chairman ,tell your readers of the proposition they put up to Mr Hodgcns in order to prevent an election? We arc-, etc.,
(Signed) F. C. ALLERBY, J. HODGENS.
