from Our Own Correspondent. Swimming Carnival. The Foxton Amateur Swimming Club held its annual carnival at the jMuniicpal baths on Saturday evening. Tho meeting was well attended and was most successful in every way. Mr. Campbell, president of the Manawatu Swimming Centre, ■welcomed the comjpetitors and visitors, and referred symj pathetically to the accident which had recently befallen W. Hirini. He also mentioned the sporting manner in which the Hirini brothers had always endeavoured to give satisfaction to the large crowds which had viewed their performances from time to time. Mr. H. Hutchins, on behalf of the Club, thanked Mr. Campbell for his encouraging welcome- and the various events were then got off. During tho evening a display of life-saving and resuscitation methods was given by the Palmerston North Y.M.G.A. team under Mr. Collier, who explained the various methods of treatment. This proved a "most interesting item. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Campbell congratulated the Club of its success and also referred to the fact that by winning the centre championship, Miss Betty Harford, of Feilding, had now annexed every championship for ladies in the centre. He also made complimentary reference to her coach, Mr. H. Parsonage. Tho visitors and competitors were afterwards entertained to supper at Wall’s, and opportunity was there taken to present the winners with their various trophies and prizes.
Borough Council. The ordinary monthly meeting c/f the Foxton Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) presiding. Reports for tlio month of February were submitted as follow: The gasworks manager (Mr. S. Heyes) reported that 328,000 cubic feet of gas had been manufactured, a slight decrease for the same month last year.
The plant at the works was working satisfactorily, and during the month he had attended to five blocked services. The balance of his time had been taken up attending to consumers’ requirements generally. A start had been made to overhaul the bench of six retorts. —Adopted. The poundkeeper reported that 8 head of stock were impounded and driving lees amounting to 4s collected. The water-works foreban reported that the following work had been carried out: Cleaning seven house drains, repairing seven hydrant valves, packing three water valves. The top reservoir in the water tower has also been cleaned out. A new manhole was put into the Norbiton road sewer as the distance between the existing manholes was too great for the cleaning rods. Other general maintenance work has been carried out. During the month 2,755,000 gallons of water were pumped. Owing to electrical fluctuations considerable inconvenience had been caused by the motor stopping after each variation in the current necessitating practically all night vigil to restart the motor on each occasion. —Adopted. At the .quarterly meeting of the Manawatu Licensing Committee, the transfer of the license of tho Manawatu hotel from Mr. J. McKenna to Mr. J. Swindalc was approved.
Fire at Manawatu Hearts. A four-roomed cottage at the beach was destroyed by fire about 1 a.m. on .Saturday morning. The cause of the fire is unknown. The house which -was owned by Mr. S. Wells, of AVanganui, had been unoccupied for some time. The insurances are not available.
Shop Days. A shop day was held on Saturday by the local Maoris to raise funds for tho forthcoming visit of the Bishop of Aotea Boa at Easter. Prize-winners were as follow: Cushion, etc., Mr. F. Eobinson; chocolates, Mrs. H. McGregor; family dinner, Mr. A. Mathers; pillow shams, Mr. H. Apraima; newlyweds' dinner, Mr. J. McGregor. In tho evening a dance was held in the Boyal Theatre and was well patronised, the Sports Committee held a shop day also on Saturday to further the interests of their candidate, Baby Joy Alexander. A’arious competitions were held, the winners being as follows: Lamb, Mtes D. Griffin; pig, Mr. J. Martin; chocolates, Willie Noekles; dinner, Mr. G. Jones; shirt, Mr. Geo. Edwards. Sunday School Picnic. Tho Presbyterian Sunday School annual picnic was held on Saturday at the beach. Games and races were indulged in and a very enjoyable time was spent by all present.
Personal. The Minister of Education (Hon. H. Atmore) has arranged to visit the local school at an early date. ' Mr. F. C. Carmont has disposed of his racehorse, Miss Pat, to Mr. S. Jones, of Sydney. It is the new owner’s ambition to win several races in Australia with his new acquisition. Mr. and Mrs. I. Corn, who have been spending a holiday in Napier, have returned home. Mrs. M. E. Seabury has returned from a holiday in Taranaki. Mr. and Mrs. Brockelsby, who have been spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Walker, have now returned to their home at Hinuera.
