SCHOOL COMMITTEES

HOKOWHITU MONTHLY MEETING. Mr. J. T. J. Heatley presided over the monthly meeting of the Hokowliitu school committee last evening. Also present were: Messrs. W. Woodroofe, C. D. Hepburn, G. Lane, C. 11. Amos, A. J. Shailer and IV. Dudley. The committee decided to express to tho Education Board its appreciation of the good work done by Mr. R. Irwin during his temporary hcadmastership. A similar letter is to be sent to Mr. Irwin. The gift of a bell for the school by Messrs. Abraham and Williams, was acknowledged. Mr. Lane forwarded an account and intimated that he wished the amount to be paid into the carnival fund. Mr. Lane was thanked for his generosity. Alembers resolved to make every effort to complete the ground improvement scheme before the expiry of their term of office. The secretary was instructed to obtain quotes for tho building of an incinerator at the school.

The headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) reported verbally to the committee on school affairs during the threo days he had been in charge. The roll for the month was 347, with an average attendance of 317.

CENTRAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS

RECENT SPORTS A SUCCESS. Mr A. Clark presided at tho monthly meeting of the Central School committee held on Tuesday evening. There were also present Messrs B. J. Jacobs, H. Canton, W. Cameron, W. R. Mayes, E. Tucker (secretary) and the headmaster (Mr E. Bary.) Headmaster’s Report. ■The report presented by the headmaster stated that last Friday the school had concluded for the present summer its classes in swimming and had gone over to physical training for the winter. They had had a very successful season, as was shown by the number of sw-imming certificates issued to scholars. The school had a system whereby as soon as a scholar could swim the width of tho baths a certificate was granted to him, and a further certificate was granted when i a length of the baths could be swum. Tho success of the swimming was shown by the fact that 76 certificates had been awarded. The annual sports day had been most enjoyable and the headmaster desired to express his appreciation to all had assisted in its organisation. The average attendance last month had been 760.5. Since the close of the last scholastic year, 152 children had left and 125 had been admitted mostly to tho infant classes, where tho pressure of work was now very high. Miss Hay had left to take over temporary duty at Kelvin Grove school and Miss Anderson had joined the staff as relieving teacher. Mrs Weeks had resigned as she was retiring.—Tho report was adopted. General Business. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £2l. Members expressed satisfaction that the sale of ice creams at the recent sports had about paid for the soft drinks that were distributed free to tho children.

Members were agreed as to the success of the sports. Tho committee placed on record appreciation of the services of tho following, to whom a vote of thanks was passed:—Mesdamees Weston Smith and Ferguson and Messrs Weston Smith, Rogers, Randall, W. Lundy, C. Shortt, Wallis, K. Butler and B. Clarke. Appreciation was also expressed for tho work of tho headmaster and staff. Tho headmaster stated that tho recent heavy showers had revealed two bad leaks in the roof of the infant department. Mr Mayes said it was too big a matter for tho committee to handle. The headmaster said something would have to be done before winter. It was decided to refer the matter to the hoard for urgent attention.

DAMP CONDITIONS AT WEST END TO BE REMEDIED BEFORE THE WINTER SEASON. Satisfaction was expressed at last evening’s meeting of tho West End school committee when tho secretary (Mr. G. Lync) reported that he had received a letter from the architect of the Wanganui Education board (Mr. E. R. Hodge) intimating that the hoard would take stops to remedy the damp condition of the school before the winter season. The damp and unhealthy state of the West End school has been tho subject of much agitation in the district. Mr. C. H. Whitehead in tho chair. There wore also present Messrs A. E. Blackbourne. A. R. Beattie, G. Tremaine, T. Downing, A. Hands, H. Healey and the secretary, Mr. G. Lyne. Headmaster’s Report. The monthly report of tho headmaster (Mr. F. H. Moore) stated that the attendance average for the past month had been 336 out of a total roll of 300. The roll number wa3 a good deal lower than at the same time last year, 58 pupils having been struck off the roll during the past four weeks, as against 50 new pupils admitted. Nurse Petersen had made a preliminary examination of a number of pupils, in preparation for the next visit of the school medicai officer, and Miss Baker had made a dental examination of pupils requiring treatment. Mr. I. Rydhouse, physical instructor, had paid his routine visit during the week. The secretary was instructed to write to the members of the ladies’ committee who had conducted the ice cream stall during the school sport 3, thanking them for tho work they had done in raising funds. Appreciation was also expressed of tho action of the Borough council in allowing the school the use of the Sportsground on the occasion of the picnic, and the secretary was instructed to forward a letter of thanks. Accounts totalling £l4 0s lid wore Gassed for payment.
