A sinister development in the timber workers' dispute was the discovery that the mooring lines of six timber laden punts had been severed. Three punts drifted into the Paramatta river fairway, where they formed a menace to ferry and other steamers. Tbja other three were restrained by add* tional steel hawsers under water, which the sabotagers had missed. The incident occurred at the Empire Timber company's wharves at Balmain, despite the fact that two watchmen were employed. , UNION’S £IOOO FINE. PAYMENT WITHIN TIME LIMIT IS IMPOSSIBLE* MELBOURNE, March B. Seven days was given from yestei* day to the Timber Workers’ union top pay tho fine of £IOOO imposed last week. Consternation has been caused among officials of the union. The gem* oral secretary says that payment within that period is an impossibility, a$ there is not £IOOO available in funds.
