MANAWATU DRAINAGE BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING.
Trustee P. J. Small presided over the regular monthly meeting of the-Mana-watu Drainage board which was held yesterday. Also present were Trustees M. A. Eliott, D. Collis, A. Gray, R. Tanner, E. W. Collins, and E. Wood. Messrs. Harrison and Lett, Rangiotu, wrote with reference to the condition of the boundary fence on Bourke’s drain, "and requesting that the board should give attention to its repair. If the board would find the wire required for the work, the -writers were prepared to find the labour, posts, battens and all other materials necessary. It was decided to carry out the work in the terms of Messrs. Harrison and Lett’s offer.
From Lockwood bridge up for a distance of 166 chains, vegetation has been cut and removed from Bourke’s drain. For a further distance of 60 chains abovo this point the drain has been widened, material excavated being used in. construction of stop banks. The time allowed for the receipt of objections having expired and no objection having been received, it is proposed to proceed with the cutting of willows in outlet of Mangaone stream. The widening and straightening of the stream immediately above Boundary road is now being carried out by the Public works Department. Subject to your Board’s approval it is proposed to remove the culvert and floodgate leading into the Mangaone stream just below Setters line. The floodgate is now much too small to deal with the water during time of flood, and is to some extent cause of Whisky creek flooding. It was resolved that the engineer be authorised to remove the floodgates as suggested and !tha,t ho be also empowered to purchase four bullocks to be used on weed eradication work in Bourke’s drain.
