NEW TITLE HOLDERS IN 440 AND LADIES’ 100

MISS WILSON SHOWS NO FORM. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The New Zealand amateur athletic championships were concluded at Basin reserve on Saturday in fine weather, but a nor'west wind, proved disconcerting. There was a good attendance. Wellington won tho shield easily. S. A. Lay broke the Australian record for the javelin throw. The championship events resulted: — 880 yards:

L. C. McLaehlan (0) 1 R. Leech (VST) 2 T. W. OGG (W) 3 Also started: C. G. McDonald (W), N. J. Suckling (G). Suckling led into the straight and in a sparkling finish, held oil McLaehlan to win by a yard and a half, with Leech four yards further back third. To tho amazement of the crowd, Suckling was disqualified for josling, and tho judges placed McLaehlan first, Leech second and Ogg (W) third. Time 2.2 1-5. 120 yards Hurdles: R. W. Lander (W) 1 F. S. Hanson (VV) 2 L. A. Newall (WT) 3 These were the only starters. Lander was first over the last hurdlo and in the sprint to tho tape got home by a touch. Newall was not far away third. Time, 15 4-ssecs. 100 yards Final: A. J. Elliott (A) 1 C. H. Jenkins (W) 2 B. Geddes (O) 3 Also started: J. H. Murphy (C), H. McCoy (A) R. Cordery (C). From a great start Elliott gained the lead at o 0 yards and went ahead to win by three yards from Jenkins, who was a yard ahead of Geddes. Time, 10 l-ssecs. Putting the Shot. P. Also started: A. Mackie (C), F. Grose (C), McGane (W). The winner led all the way. He was challenged ait the straight entrance by Oakley and O’Brien but was fast enough to win by half a length. Timo, 1.10 1-5. 100 yards Ladles’ Final.

Miss E. Martyn (C) 1 Miss T. Kench (W) ........ 2 Miss N. Wilson (W) 3 The Canterbury girl won all the way, finishing up about a half a yard ahead of Miss Ken eh, with Miss Wilson close up, third. Time, 12 l-ssecs. 440 yards Hurdles: F. S. Ramson (W) .. 1 R. W. Lander (W) 2 A. Laing (C) 3 Also started: D. Kerr Taylor (A). The title holder led all the way and although Lander looked as though ho might reduce the leeway 120 yards from homo, Ramson had no trouble in completing the journey with three yards to spare, Laing was six yards further back. Kerr-Taylor fell at the first hurdle. Time, 58 3-seecs. High Jump. R. H. Neville (C) sft Bin .... 1 F. Brady (W) sft 7in 2 E. G. Sutherland (W) sst Gin . 3 220 yards. A. J. Elliott (A) 1 C. H. Jenkins (W) 2 R. Cordery (C) 3 Also started: H. McCoy (A), B. Geddea (0). In line, Elliott went on with a great burst to win by two yards from Jenkins, who only beat the fastfinishing Cordery by a string. Time, 22sccs. One Mile Cycle. T. Oakley (W) 1 C. Flett (W) • F. O’Brien (C) • •Dead heated for second place. Also started: M. Gane (W), H. J. C. Kilsen (WT). Grose did not start on account of the injuries he received in his spill in the half mile. A furlong from home. Gane made a valiant effort to got round the leaders but nothing could hold Oakley in the straight and hn passed the judges with two lengths to spare. Flett and O’Brien dead heated for second place. Time, 2.29 3-5. One Mile Flat. J. W. Savidan (A) 1 C. Gibbons (WT) 2 H. McDonald (W) 3

Also started: G. Bayne (W), C. Campbell (W), G. B. Taylor (C). Savidan took the lead after the end of the first lap and on entering the final quarter, had as his nearest opponents Campbell and McDonald. At the 400 yards mark, Savidan lengthened his stride and set off for home at a bat which brought the crowd to its feet. McDonald made a bold bid to caitch the Aucklander, passing Campbell and getting to within ten yards of the leader. One hundred yards from the tape Savidan placed the issue beyond doubt, finishing a great sprint a dozen yards from Gibbons, who in a nicely judged run, cut McDonald out of second money. Time, 4.29 1-5. A. W. Findlay (A) 1 W. A. Vcifch (W) 2 J. Fleming (W) 3 Also started: L. C. McLachlan (O), A L. Tideman (C), N. J. Suckling (C). Findlay had tho best of the deal all the way. His most serious oppon-

ent over the final stages was Veitch but the Otago man, who finished as well as ho had run, withstood tk > challenge and won by two yards. Fleming was close up. Time, 51secs. One Mile Walk.

Just after tho commencement of the last, Oakley took the lead and on a fine finishing ride, obtained the verdict by three lengths. Wade was second, inches ahead of Gane. Time, 7.30 l-ssecs. Mile Medley Relay. Canterbury (Suckling, Tideman, Blakenay, Cordery) 1 Wellington (Leech, McDonald, Walker, Jenkins) 2 The only starters. The lead established by Canterbury over the half mile distance was reduced by McDonald (Wn) on the quarter, but lost again on the first 220. Jenkins made a fine effort to catch Cordery over the final furlong, but finished five yards behind him and the event went to Can* terbury. Time, 3.47 3-5.
