Greatford Athletic Sports

From Our Own Correspondent,

The third annual sports meeting of tiie Greptl'ord Sports Club tvas held at Mr. T. 11. Willis's property, ‘Woodendean,’' Grcatford, on Wednesday afternoon. Perfect weather conditions favoured the holding of the meeting, and the largo number of viistors from Marton, Bulls, Ohakea and district spent a very enjoyable day. The field event 3 were all well contested and the ..plcndid handicaps of Mr. G. Benson were responsible for some fine finishes. The Marton sprinter, Cyril Lodingnam, was in splendid form and won the 100, 200 und -1-10 yards races in convincing style, being awarded the points cup presented by the club. The chopping events were a decided attraction and the public was treated to some very good exhibitions, one resulting in a tic between three competitors.

The president (Mr. H. T. Whale) in bis capacity as supervisor of the sports, was a host in himself and attended to the wants of the visitors.

Messrs. K. Short (secretary) and R. Martin (treasurer) discharged their rospectives duties with energy and despatch, and the success of the meeting reflects credit on their joint efforts and tho whole-hearted co-operation of the people of Grcatford. To Messrs. Bishop and W. Whitfield credit is due for the manner in which they discharged their judicial duties in the field events and similarly to Messrs. E. S. Lewis, A. Stantiall and H. T. Whale in the chopping events. Mr. N. Lewiß, the starter, sent away some very good flolds and kept a stern eye on would-be ‘fliers.’

The thanks of tho G’lub are due to Mr. T. R. Willis for his generosity in putting his grounds at ftie disposal of the sports committee. Tho events resulted as follows:

Chopping.

Open handicap chop, 12 inch: J. Andrews (25secs.) ,1; M. Downs (scr.), 2; C. Whale, jnr. (25secs.), 3. Eive others competed. Second handicap chop of 12 inch blocks: S. Hakaria (sor.), 1; C. Whale (4socs.), and J. Johansen. (6sees.) tied and on chopping off the latter won with Whale a close second.

An exhibition chop was given by Mr. H. Wilson, a well-known ‘pro,’ who, conceding Mr. A. Kendrick (a local veteran) 10 secs, just managed to get his log hewn two seconds before his opponent. WITH THE BOWLERS. BULLS DEFEATS HUNTERVILLE. On Wednesday the local bowlers met two rinks from Hunterville on the Bulls green in the final for the southern section of the Rangitikei Shield contest. The local men have been showing very good form of late; this was well sustained in the Shield match, the visitors being defeated by the narrow margin of 32 to 30. Several players journeyed down from Marton and in a match for the interclub challenge Tikis presented by Mr. Harford, of Feilding, defeated the local rink by 26 to 19.
