WATER RATIONING MOOTED WHILE DAM IS FLOWING OVER
Mayor’s Warning EXCESSIVE TOWN USE REDUCES PRESSURE OUTSKIRTS LIMITED. While water is pouring over the lip of the Tiritea dam, there is a possibility, not remote, that the Borough Council may be forced to impose restrictions on the use of water. In explaining the position to a reporter, the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham) stated that while there is an ample supply of water available from Tiritea there had been such an extravagant and inconsiderate draw-off of water by the central and low-lying portions of the borough during the last few days, that residents in the higher levels, particularly Terrace End, are not getting sufficient for everyday domestic purposes. It is not lack of water but its reticulation, which is the cause of the present conditions. The only remedy for the present unsatisfactory position is through the cooperation of citizens. His Worship asks that the use of hoses be discontinued during the daytime and that, where possible, economics be effected so that the whole borough may receive ordinary supplies for household and industrial uses.
“I am loth to issue a prohibition when it is not really necessary,” stated Mr. Graham. “Once citizens are aware of the position I know their sense of civic responsibility will impel unselfish assistance for an equitable distribution of water. Hoses may be used in the evenings.”
