AMANULLAH RAISES HIS STANDARD AGAIN ON BROTHER’S DEFEAT

Rebels Hold Kabul

MAY YET STRIKE i ■ EFFECTIVE BLOW

PARTY SMALL, BUT STAUNCH,

Australian Press Association. Received Friday, 7.0 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 17.

The Daily Express correspondent says King Amanullah has evidently seized on the victory of the rebels and the consequent defeat of hip Royal brother to consider himself once again tho only rightful ruler of the country. Ho is assisted by the strong personality of his wife, with a staunch, though ut present small following and may yot reimpose his will on Afghanistan by striking an effoctivo blow at tho.rebels while they are disorganised by victory.

Amanullah May Yet Regain Throne KABUL IN HANDS OF REBEL CHIEF. ‘ DELHI, Jan. 17. Mystery surrounds the situation in Afghanistan, following Prince Inayatullah’s accession. Reports from Peshawar state that the armistice arranged by the Mullahs is not being observed, and that Bacchasakao, with a largo rebel force, has completely-. surrounded Kabul, seized the wireless and aeroplanes and cut off the capital from tho outside world. It is also stated that Amanullah and tho new King have been taken prisoners by the robels. One local source reports that Amanullah reached Chaman on Tuosday and hoisted his flag over tho palace, while another source discredits the story of tho flight to Kandahar, believing that ho is still at Kabul with his brother, Inayatullah with whom ho was formorly on tho most friendly terms.

It is believed that Amanullah’s abdication was merely a tactical move and that ho will attempt to regain the throno with tho aid of the powerful Durrani tribo inhabiting Kandahar and tho suburbs where tho Queen and the Queen mother.and other membors of the Royal family fled.

It is understood that the rebel tribesmen have captured Jagdalak, mid-way between Kabul and Jalalabad, with a large Afghan force. Baeehasakao has openly declared his intention of becoming the Afghan King. The British Legation is again in the dangor zone, but it is believed that its sanctity will he respected. It is reported that Bolshevist influence is largely responsible for fomenting the present trouble in Afghanistan.

Prince Inayatullah’s Short Reign in Kabul HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF. LONDON, Jan. 17. The latest information from authoritative circles in London reiterates that King Amanullah is at Kandahar. Moscow reports stato that it is learned by a wireless message from Kabul that rebel troops surrounded the Royal residence, whereupon Prince Juayatullah abdicated on the condition that ho and his family were guaranteed their safety, upon which tho rebel leador, Baeehasakao, entored the Royal Palace. His supportors announce that ho is assuming supremo power under the title of Khabibullah Ghazi.

Coincident with this, tho Daily Express’s Karachi correspondent reports that Amanullah has raised the standard over tho Royal residenc'o at Kandahar and is gathering support in order to attack the rebels, who have captured Kabul.

The Daily Express points out that history has thus repeated itself. Afghanistan is again ruled from two cities—-Kabul and Kandahar.

Three brothers, and a nephew, of the Sirdar Omar Khun, the Afghan Prince who disappeared from Allahabad, were arrested at Calcutta. Four other brothers of Omar Khan were arrestod at Allahabad. All are being removed to Rangoon.
