£500,000 EXPENDED ON STREETS AND HOUSING ONE JARRING NOTE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Thursday 10.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 17. The Civic Commissioners who supplanted the Sydney City Council, submitted their annual report to-night. They point out that the council staff which originally numbered 2742, was reduced to 2000 by last September. The retrenchment rendered necessary the payment of retiring and compassionate allowances aggregating £2700, and the full effect of the staff reduction would not he felt until next year. The Commissioners estimate there will be a deficit of £50,000 on the year's operations. Nearly £500,000 was spent last yeal on street improvement, street widening Park improvement anil slum eradication. The only unwelcome note in the report is the prediction that electricity charges are likely to be increased.
