How They Ran
Hymestrason At Last. Although early money came for Rash, Panorama wound up a £llO better favourite for the Hurdles, while Hymestrason was a sobd third fancy. The favourite went a shocking race and seems to be slipping rapidly. Rash dashed away at the start, followed by Deluge, . Hymestrason and Asleep, which fell at the first fence —the only casualty. The leader increased his advantage and going along the straight was a dozen lengths in front of Hymestrason, with a Dig gap t.o Deluge, Panorama and Robu:ant. The pacemaker was gathered up at the straight entrance, where Hymestrason and Deluge were only lengths behind. In a final sprint, from the last fence, Hymestrason stuck to his job and finished on the judge a head in front Of Rash, with Deluge a similar distance away. Roburant was a poor fourth and Panorama last. Rash’s effort to win from end to end was all but successful, but Robinson did not allow him to get too far away and had enough in reserve. Deluge would probably have won if he had been taken up earlier; he moved very quickly when asked to go but he failed to more than sustain the pace in the last 100 yards.
A Foxton Trio. Foxton supplied all the placed horses in the Novice Stakes, namely, Star Girl, Warzone and Bon Acre. The winner put up a good performance and was rchandicapped Slbs. for her subsequent engagement. Snowshoe was first to leave the line, with the favourite Aeredity, Star Girl and Nasselle next. Grossing the top, Snowshoe, Aeredity, Bione and Warzone comprised the leading division. The pacemaker dropped away at the home turn and Aeredity took up the running from Bione, Nasselle, Snowshoe, Basaloma and Warzone. The last-named headed Aeredity at the half distance, but Star Girl, which was in trouble more than once in hor position on the fence, came like a yellow streak to beat Warzone by a short neck. Bon Acre’s finishing effort got him third money, half a length away. Bione was fourth and the favourite, Nasselle and Snowshoe followed.
Blimp’s Cup. Nightmarch and Rotowhero declined their Cup engagement, leaving ten. Toxeuma was a screaming favourite and had twice the amount of support accorded Lady Limond. Teri, the third favourite, had £SO less than Lady Limond and good money also came for Maui. All the others were paying a fat price. From a good despatch, Blimp was first out, but running into the straight, Teri had charge from Toxeuma, Royal Game, Maui, Blimp and Lady Limond. The leader kept his position, and entering the back tho order behind him was Blimp, Toxeuma and Lady Limond together. Blimp moved up to the leader on the bend, with, Toxeuma, Royal Game, Lady Limond and Maui in close order. The field was bunched at the straight entrance, Teri and Blimp piloting Toxcuma, Maui and Lady Limond. The pace was on and half a dozen names were being proclaimed, among them Discourse, which showed on the outside, but never got up with the leaders. Blimp was still leading and handling the going so well that it was apparent he would take some boating. He came nwav again over the last few yards to win by two good lengths from Maui, which beat ToxCuma by one and a-half lengths. Kalos was a fourth, a
length away; then came Twinlc and Lady Limond. Toxeuma went a good race but could not summon a linishiug effort on the sandy track. Tori stopped quickly when whips wero produced and finished well back. Eoyal Game was never dangerous in the straight, after having a good run all the way round. Blimp’s effort was excellent and stamps him as class. The form of Ivilmiss was only fair; she was never in the hunt. Lady Limond must have been showing the touts something for the support she got was a surprise to many. She was never further back than sixth, in which position she finished. Discourse was raced well back and could not summon the pace when called on. Her effort was short-lived. Halos came along with great dash over the last 100 yards and his present form is worth watching. Of Maui’s ■performance, it may be said it was well anticipated locally. Ho should not bo long in getting a winning bracket. Tvvink was the outsider of the field but beat more than beat her.
Warfille Wins. Warfille, the all but outsider in the Himataugi hack, won by the narrowest of margins from White Ringlet, after being in the lead for the latter half of the journey. Dermond, the favourite, began well, got lost in the straight, but came again to finish in fifth place. The best, beginners were Second Thought, Derniod, First Ruler, and White Ringlet. Crossing the top, Warfille ran up the van and round the bend was clear of Second'Thought and invite Ringlet. The AVanganui gelding was on terms with A\ r arlillc as they straightened up for home followed by Royal Black and First Ruler together. AVarlille and White Ringlet flashed past the post together, the verdict going to the former by a nose. Royal Black was one and a-half lengths away in third -place, followed by Atholspear and Dermod. 1 Gold Cure Cherry Bipe.
The fact that Gold Cure was supposed to be short of a race lengthened his -price in the Awahou Hack handicap, but he won like a tradesman without being called on for a big effort. Tercmoana was first fancy of the punters, being £ll6 better backed than Bissau, but lie ran as usual. Shining Star, on the rails, got a break on the field from the barrier rise, being followed out by Gold Cure, Lady Alophen, Land Guard and Degree. ’Gold Cure and Shining Star then became associated in the lead and crossing the top, were running a couple of lengths clear of Land Guard, Volplane, Tercmoana and Bissac. Shining Star headed. tho winner into tho straight, with Bissac and Aurora Borealis right behind. Gold Curo then came away and won comfortably by one and a-half lengths. In a good tussle for second money, Bissac beat Mister Gamp by a neck. Shining Star had drifted to fourth, just ahead of Aurora Borealis. Mister Gamp finished on well and should be to hand quickly. A Dead Heat.
The defection of Epistle left a field of six in which honours were cut up between Miss Bat and Monaghan. It was a good betting race and Monaghan the outsider, was paying only a little over £4. Gallannxore was a £l6 better fp.vourite than Helotis. Miss Pat got the worst of the start, losing, half a dozen lengths. Helotis, Borsalene, Millais; Callanmore and Monaghan loft the post in that order, Millais and Monaghan being up behind tho leader at tho top turn. Tho Lueullus niaro was still in tho van at the straight entrance, with Millais ranging alongside and Monaghan, ,:Miss Pat, Callanmore and Borsalene at short intervals. At the half distance Miss Pat went to the front, followed by Monaghan and these wero the only two in the finish. Miss Pat was ahead a yard from the post but Monaghan, was given a final kick and they passed the line locked together. The judge declared a dead heat. Two lengths away came Callanmore, Millais was just ahead of Helotis and Borsalene was at the roar.
Mis Pat ran- the race of her successful career, and it was bad luck that she could not survive the decision. Monaghan has greatly, improved and now that he is right again, ho should get another stake or two before the weights stop him. Helotis ran her usual 5} 'furlongs in front, then called for a chair. Callanmore did not draw a handy marble and never really got going till tho last .few. yards.. It was a disappointing performance. Millais and Borsalene were ordinary. Tenacre’s First.
Balloon and Tenacre,' which wero coupled, wero goad favourites for the Marotiri Hack handicap, for which Boundary received £l3O less support. For the first time, tho favourite was the winning way, and Tenacre’s win was consequently well received, although Balloon was believed to be the first string. Sambur and Boundary began best, Kentish Lady being caught napping. After a furlong and a-half, Star Girl moved out of tho ruck and got in behind Tenacre and Tapestry, with Boundary and Sambur behind those. There was little change in the order for the rest of the race. Tenacre kept up to his job boating the other Hawora candidate, Boundary by a neck, with Tapestry a length and a-hall away. Balloon and Star Girl were next. Henna the Last. With Royal Game and Our Jack out of the Herrington handicap, six wont to the post. Punters had to give odds about tho chances of Henna, which was the hottest favourite of the day. Again they wore right. Decoy Bird, the second favourite, had less than half the amount entrusted to Mr Carmont’s mare. AVilderncrs, Lin Arlington, Bright Day, Henna, Vigilance and Decoy Bird ran out of tho straight in that order. Tho last-named began to move up once into the back stretch and at the five furlongs was in front. Crossing tho top he was clear of Lin Arlington, Henna, Vigilance and Bright Day. Decoy Bird was still in front at tho entrance to the straight, with Lin Arlington, Bright Day and Henna it a challenging position. The faVourito drew clear within tho distance and beat Bright Day by a neck, with Lin Aldington two and a-hnif lengths away. Vigilance was fourth, Decoy Bird a •poor fifth and Wilderness, which bled along the back, w-alking in last.
