POTATO GLUT HERE; FAMINE IN SYDNEY
Embargo Absurdity
N.S.W CROP MAY BE A FAILURE
United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Wednesday, 9.50 p.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 16.
A cable message is published hero containing information from Auckland to-day that there is a glut of potatoes which are on offer at £S to £8 10s per ton in the Dominion while consumers here are paying upwards of sixpence per pound retail. The message has aroused unusual interest. The embargo against New Zealand potatoes which has been in existence since February 19:27 enables Tasmanian and VietoriaD to reap exceptionally high prices in Sydney where consumers are naturally anxious that the embargo should bo lifted if only temporarily. The Agricultural Department in Sydney states that the matter is entirely one for the Commonwealth and adds that if tho New South Wales potato crop should bo a complete failure owing to the absence of rain, which seems highly likely, the prices of local potatoes will go still higher.
