BE PATRIOTIC IN TRADE AS IN WAR
ADVICE COL. POWLES. An appeal to New Zealanders to continue to be as British, as they were during the war, was made at the annual meeting of the Palmerston North Luncheon Club yesterday, by Colonel C. G. Powles, the retiring president. He pointed out that before the war Germany had stood in England’s way throughout the world and New Zealand had been loyal to the Mother Country when the crisis came. That war was really not over yet as far as the existence of the British Empire and the happiness of its people were concerned. To-day America had taken Germany’s place and the Americans were working their way into British markets everywhere. There was raging an economic w r ar which would entail a great deal of sacrifice on the part of the British people. Everywhere was the cry that American cars -were more suitable than British, but England was able to turn out machines just as good, if not better. Col. Powles thought New Zealand should sacrifice something to help England win the economic war.
