FIRE AT AWAPUNI
STABLES MAKE SPECTACULAR BLAZE. At about 11.30 last night a vivid flare in the direction of Awapuni drew the gaze of many residents of Palmerston North and the surrounding country. So bright was the reflection in the sky that the impression gained ground that a really serious conflagration was in progress, but fortunately such fears were not realised. Tho outbreak occurred in a largo stable near the residence of Mr. Moffatt, of Awapuni. Tho building, which contained two living rooms anu four loose boxes, only recently came into Mr. Moffatt’s possession and had been fitted up for occupation by horseowners. Mr. Moffatt retired at eleven o’clock, and knew nothing till roused by a passer-by when he found tho place ablaze. Tho building was an one, and the fact that it had at one time teen painted with tar caused the fire to burn merrily, and it was this which gave the impression of a much more serious conflagration. No reason can be assigned fbr the outbreak, and as the building had only just come into Mr. Moffatt’s possession ho could not give the amount of the insurance.
