THAMES, Jan. 15. The following weights have been declared by Mr. M'Manemin for the Bay of Islands Meeting on January 19:— EAIKOHE HANDICAP, 5 furlongs and 110yds.

TAKAPUNA HANDICAPS. THAMES, Jan. 35. The weights for the first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club's summer meeting. on Saturday, January 26, are as follow: — OEEWA HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, I mile and 1 furlong.

Notes by “Avis.”

FOXTON RACES TO-DAY. Foxton's two days Tacing carnival will open to-day, when, with fine weather the club should have no cause to regret its decision to have the races “on its own.” Most of the “regulars” who formerly felt themselves bound to attend the Trentham fixture on Anniversary Day, will no doubt be glad of the opportunity of a day at the seaside course. Trains leave Palmerston North at 9.40 and 10.5 a.m. leaving the racecourse at 5.10 p.m. The first race starts at 11.45 a.m. The course is in splendid order. llecent scratcliings are: Cup: Rotowhero. Novice Stakes: Austerity, Werata, Awahou Hack: Havering. POROUTAWHAO HURDLES, of 140 sovs.; 13 furlongs. Atareria 10 10 Rash 9 4 Panorama 10 6 Deluge 9 0 Hymestrason 910 Boburant 9 0 Asleep . 9 7 Arkansas 9 0 The top-weight, Atareria, was in i racing mood on the second day at Marten but he is a doubtful quantity at ar.y time and there will probably be a preference for Panorama and Hymestrason. The former is capable of a good "performance but ho has not been having a lucky run lately. The son of Hymcstra is consistent ,having been in the picture each time during the holiday racing, without winning. He must be wrtten down as not quite good enough. Asleep has no public form aid although he has caught punters napping on other occasions, it is unlikely he will be in condition to pull it off to-day. Rash paid a royal divvy for second at Otaki and as ho is down in the w-eights, ho should bo well to the fore during the meeting. Dejuge has the pace and will be able to handle the sandy going. He appears as a distinct "possibility. The other two are not likely to come in for much support before the race, or for a great deal of comment afterwards. In a summing up, two that may acknowledge support are Panorama and Deluge. NOVICE STAKES, of 100 sovs. Three-year-olds and upwards to carry Bst. lbs.; two-year-olds 7st. 7ibs. No allowances; 6 furlongs. Tenacre .Star Girl Warzono Fine Acre Potshot Bon Acre Otauru Lass - Basaloma Painting Biono Nassellc Rcflecto Acrc-T.emper- .Snowshoc ance g Fallow Acrcdity Acredity seems to be the best of this lot, most of which have been racing lately. The fashionably bred Painting showed some form at Woodville and might be the best of them to-day. Tenacre and Star Girl, well handled, might have a chance but the first tiNt arc preferred, where preference is naturally limited.

At present, 11 remain in the Cup—an excellent field, with some well performed candidates. There 6oems to be a concensus of opinion that the topweight will find the going an additional handicap, but there can be little question about his being the best three year old racing and of his great heart and staying power. Toxeuma is improving as he runs and at Auckland, with a third in the G.N. Derby, and second behind Pegaway and Aussie, he showed himself capable of meeting the best. The course will suit Teri and Kilmiss while Discourse and Lady

Liinond will be on their homo course. Discourse won a treble at Fuxton last year and is a better animal limn she was then. It will be remembered also that she went a good race in the Manawatu Cup, so sho will be one of the favoured ones to-day. None of the others will be favoured there being no reason to suppose Twink will do it again as he did last year, and the decision seem to be between Night March, Discourse and Toxeuma. HIMATANGI HACK, of 110 sovs.; 6 furlongs.

The fact of White Ringlet being trained at Wanganui will not be to his disadvantage here, as the nature of the track is similar. He is a much improved horse, as his Marton form showed. Argue, Second Thought and lirst Ruler aro all in great fettle but for an alternative to White Ringlet, one inclines to the last-named.

Apart from the top-weight they are an ordinary lot in the Awahou hack handicap. As the scale stands, Balloon and Bissac should go pretty close to him, especially as Gold. Cure has not raced for some time, as is the ease also with the useful Mister Gamp. Lady Alophen a local resident, has been “named” on more than one occasion without showing anything to justify support. If she is any good, her opportunity is to-day. Balloon and Bissac win probably carry the confidence of punters. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, of 170 sovs.; 6 furlongs.

There is material for a great race in the open sprint, though the field i? small. Miss Tat has the weight to which she is entitled, and there are others which appeal more strongly. Epistle came and conquered on the. last day at Awapuni and went on with it at Hawke’s Bay, so there will be a distinct trend of opinion in that direction. lielotis is consistent, and will be suited by the course. She got a winning bracket in a hack sprint last . year. Callamuore is in good order and is due of a change of fortune. He has weighed in on each appearance this season without scoring a win. Millais is another sprinter that is entitled to respect. Monaghan, on the same mark, drew a blank each time at Otaki but showed better form nearer home during tho holidays. He would not abed to show miraculous improvement to be dangerous at the weight. However, Epistle, Helotis and Callanmore ought to be able to supply a winning bracket fiom amongst them. MAROTIRI HACK, of 120 sovs.; 6 furlongs.

If Boundary were not in the Marotiri hack handicap, one might easily mistake it for the maiden event—they are the poor of the equine -world, who, unfortunately, are big factors in keeping full the ranks of the human poor, who are always with us. Boundary should be favourite but Balloon is down to contest this race and if started, may be equal to the opposition. Of the others, Kentish Lady has the best certificate.

HERRINGTON HANDICAP, of 170 sovs.; 1 mile.

Royal Game is in the Cup, but claims another engagement in the last race, in which his chances appear to be much brighter. Bright day will be theae, but he will no doubt need the race. He is to go on to Trentham later. Henna and Vigilance are trained at Foxton and the best fancied of the two ought to be well within the “safety” zone. One inclines to Henna as the one.

A TROTTER’S HANDICAP. WELLINGTON CLUB EXPLAINS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 15. The oflicials of the Wellington Trotting Club have made the following explanation in regard to the scratching of Native Prince for his engagements at the Wellington meeting on Saturday:— Mrs. J. E. Swectapple, the owner of Native Prince, telegraphed from Auckland that Native Prince had been unfairly handicapped and to withdraw him from all engagements. The Wellington Club’s officials, discovering that Mrs. Swcetapple had the impression that her horse was handicapped on fifteen yards, as published incorrectly in an Auckland newspaper, telegraphed the correct handicap of Native Prince is twelve yards, adding: "Do you wish to cancel scratching?” The club received a telegram from Mrs. Sweetapple: “Accept all engagements.” The Wellington Club rules that it did not receive Mrs. Swcetapple's first telegram and "waited for confirmation of the scratching after she had learned the correct handicap. Under these circumstances it is ruled by the club thai Native Prince is an acceptor for Saturday’s meeting at the Hutt Park. WELLINGTON, Jan. 35.

Travis Axworthy has been penalised 24 yards in the Improvers’ Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting.
