LADY ANNE’S SYMPTOMS
Gossip has succeeded, or nearly succeeded, in getting the Prince of Wales married off on many occasions. His Royal Highness is of distinctly marriageable age, the world’s most eligible bachelor, and it is not so long ago since a serious-minded English daily reminded him editorially that it was time he took the plunge. The Empire expects (so it said) the heirs to the throne -to be settled in double harness by tho time they are in the thirties. This accounts for some of the efforts made to make a match for the Prince. Not long ago it was Lady May Cambridge, daughter of the Eutl of Athlone. There is also some talk of a Spanish Infanta. But more probable seems the latest rumour. It connects the prince’s name with that of beautiful 18-year-old Lady Anne Wellesley, daughter of the Marquis of Douro, and a descendant of the illustrious Duke of Wellington. When the Prince was in Africa, Lady Anne lay ill with pneumonia. Her progress was cabled day by day to tho Prince, in code. Asked whether his dnughter was engaged to the Prince, the Marquis of Douro refused to confirm or deny. But he did not deny that the Prince had Stlown solicitude.
