From Our Own Correspondent. Croquet. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent on tho lawn on Monday, when the challengers for the Nicholson mallets and several visitors were present from Manakau.

Mesdanies Mason and Franks, the Shannon holders, retained the mallets by the excellent margin of 10 points, beating Mrs Evans and Miss Herricks, of Manakau club, by 26 to 16. Several friendly games were played during the afternoon and evening. On Friday next, the holders will defend a challenge from Mrs Walker and Miss Dunn, of the Levin club.

Word has been received that Mr. W. Roach of the Bank of New Zealand stalf, Foxtou, was successful in passing a further two subjects, making five in all, for his banking diploma. Also Mr Frank Murray of the Bank of New Zealand, Otaki, passed in two subjects making four in all, of the same examination. Both are cx-Shannonites and well-known in the district.

Mr Jack Roach, of Mcssts W. and T. Young’s staff, Wellington, passed his examination for insurance work.

A party of Shannonites ,motoring on the Foxton Beach on Sunday, afternoon, had a narrow escape of losing their car. While driving along the water’s edge, and. in an attempt to turn, the car suddenly became stuck in the wet sand, which reached the running board. As the tide was coming in, the wmter quickly advanced to the ear. With visions of the vehicle being covered by water, the driver made frantic efforts to get it free under its own power. In the meantime a member of the party went along the beach for assistance. The services of another car being obtained, the stranded car was towed out of danger, much to the relief of all. The i troubles of the party were not yet over, however, as on the homeward journey, the swag containing the picnicking gear, which had been tied on the back, was lost. Fortunately this was recovered later.
