ENGLAND WOULD BE TERMINUS OF ENTIRE EUROPEAN RAILWAYS

Channel Tunnel Project

FRENCH ENTHUSIASM SEES NO OBJECTIONS

HANDSOME RETURN.

Times Cable. Received Tuesday, 0,0 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 7. "At a stroke of the pen, England can become the western tenninous of tho entire European rail Scheme," is how French economists envisage the consequence of the Channel tunnel. They consider Britain over-estimates the military aspect. Admittedly, the committee of imperial defence rightly declared the tunnel held elements of danger but this comparative drawback should not be allowed to outweigh the incalculable economic benefits, by which Britain stands to gain most.

It is estimated here that Britain in a few years will recover from the tunnel’s earning the entire cost of defending the Dover approaches. The French share of the neecssary capital would be quickly forthcoming. Engineers are convinced that the difficulty of disposing of waste material can be surmounted by forcing it through vertical borings into the channel, as this method has proved practicable on a smaller scale.
