NEW INVENTIONS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN
INGENIOUS GADGETS An invention patented by a woman is a which may be filled with lioiling water. It is fairly light in Weight, so is good for travelling, and it is practical because it is generally possible to obtain boiling water whereever one goes. The heat lasts for 10 minutes and then, of course, can be renewed by more»boiling water. A great advantage is that this iron cannot scorch tho most delicate fabrics.
A portable metal hook is another very practical little gadget thought of by a woman. It may be slipped into a bag, and. in church, at the theatre, concert hall, or restaurant can be placed over the back of the scat or on the scat in front, where it is ready to hold the hat, bag or umbrella. For the theatregoer it is a solution of the problem where to put the hat that is so troublesome on the knee. Several other new inventions are of special interest to women, notably a collapsible cot of the simplest description. This consists of folding supports, the bed itself being made of very pliable three-ply wood, ventilated with holes, that is pressed in between tho sido supports, and can be taken out to be scrubbed.
A hinged fixture on ball-bearings to bo attached to oven grids or shelves so that they draw out automatically when the oven door is opened to enable the housewife to sec what is within, >s another excellent idea. Very practical too are metal shelf-supports with spikes requiring no nails so that shelves can bp put up in the minimum of time, also a tradesman’s indicator to hang in the window with drop shutters for the names of tradesmen not wanted. This is intended to save their time and to eliminate the need of the housewife to come to the door unneccs tnrily. From Toys to Motors. A safety bread cutter that could be used by a child is a device to hold the bread while slicing. Another good safety and labour-saving invention for the home is a fixed wood chopper mounted edge upward in a triangular block of woo’d. The wood is placed on the blade and struck with a mallet, the cutting edge being set nt such an angle that the cut piece ■ falls down instead of flying into the air as when struck by an ordinary liatchct. A new method of driving and controlling mechanical toys That would surely give delight to children was also seen. The toy, whether a motorcar on land or a boat on a pond, has attached to it a flexible tube about six or seven feet long, and is worked by turning a handle at the enfl of the tube. As the toy goes nearly as fast as a child can walk and will turn corners, one can foresee much fun in running races. Another good toy was a rocking horse- on wheels which advances with the action of rocking and is controlled by a steering whec*l. Probably most children have wished that their stationary rocking horse would move on a bit!
