The Rev. J. D. anil .Mrs. McArthur left yesterday afternoon for Christchurch, where their holiday will be spent. Mr. McArthur expects to resume his duties at Cuba Street Church on January 27. Mr. C. W. Garrard, senior inspector of schools in Auckland, will represent. New Zealand at the annual conference of Australian and New Zealand school inspectors in Sydney at the end of the month.

The death has occurred in Christchurch of Mr. William Henry Denton, aged 60, after a long illness, states a Press Association telegram. He was a principal in the firm of Messrs Trigg? ami Denton, leather merchants, and was well known to followers of trotting. At the time of his death lie was the scuior member of the New Zealand Trotting association.

The death occurred recently at his home, 87 Waipapa road, Hataitai, of Mr. Frederick Overcnd, a resident of Wellington for 71 Venrs. He was well known as a steward in the coastal trade for 35 years on the Rangatira, Stormbird, Manawatu, anti Wainui. Mrs. Overend arrived in the pioneer ship Oliver Lang, when Jive years of age. Sh? still attends the Early Settlers’ association meetings. Five daughters live in the Wellington district.

Mr. E. L. Bartlcct, tennis champion of New Zealand, is a visitor to Palmorston North. Mr. Bartlcct yesterday had the unusual experience of being a spectator on the opening day of the Manawatu association’s tournament. He is still feeling the effects of the strenuous efforts which placed him in the proud position of New Zealand’s premier tennis player, and is taking a "rest cure.” On the principle that a change is as good as n rest, Mr. Bartlcct yesterday afternoon did a round of golf on the Ifokowhitu links.
